Landshut's largest district festival since 2003
The Bismarckplatzfest has been held annually in early June on the central Bismarckplatz in Landshut since 2003. With over 20 editions, it has established itself as the largest district festival in the independent city of Lower Bavaria and is considered the unofficial start of the Landshut summer festival season. The event is organized by the local business association, supported by the City of Landshut, the Government of Lower Bavaria, and numerous local businesses.
The festival begins on Friday afternoon with the ceremonial tapping of the first beer keg by the mayor and runs until Sunday evening. A large stage hosts a variety of acts, from Bavarian brass bands and party bands to tribute acts (e.g., Roxette and Modern Talking tributes) and small artistic performances like flamenco dancing. Sunday is traditionally Bavarian, concluding with well-known folk music and Schlager stars – in 2026, including Munich's cult singer Nicki.
Local festival caterers and restaurateurs present their specialties around the stage:
A total of around 2,000 seats are available, contributing to the festive yet familiar atmosphere of the Bismarckplatzfest.
Saturday and Sunday afternoons are particularly geared towards families: bouncy castles, a face painting station, games, and craft activities, as well as performances by regional dance groups provide entertainment. Admission is free throughout the festival – a deliberate commitment by the organizers to an accessible district festival for all citizens of Landshut.
Bismarckplatz is located between the historic old town with its famous Trausnitz Castle and Bahnhofstraße. This integrates the festival into the urban life of Landshut and complements the diverse festival calendar of the ducal city, which ranges from the Landshut Wedding to the Spring Dult and the Hofmusiktage.
The Bismarckplatzfest 2026 opens on Friday, June 5 at 12 PM, with Mayor Dr. Thomas Haslinger officially opening the festival from 7 PM. The musical opening features a Bavarian brass band and the party band Lichtfänger. From 10 AM on Saturday, festival operations run all day – in the afternoon, bands like Brickhouse and Klangkommode provide a great atmosphere, along with a flamenco performance and rock tribute acts in the evening. Sunday, from 10 AM to 10 PM, is dedicated to Bavarian culture: folk music, traditional dances, competitions, and concluding with a performance by Munich's party singer Nicki.
Free admission. Food and drinks on site: Sausage roll approx. €4–4.50, half-liter of beer approx. €4.50, glass of wine approx. €5, "Steckerlfisch" approx. €14.
Bismarckplatz is centrally located in Landshut, just a few minutes' walk from the main train station. Access via the A92 motorway (Munich–Deggendorf). Some surrounding streets will be partially closed during the festival; parking is available in the Altstadt or Hauptbahnhof parking garages.
Free admission on all three festival days. Food and drinks are paid for individually on site. A half-liter of beer costs approximately €4–5, a liter (Maß) on Bavarian Sunday is available from the festival caterers.
On Sunday, the Bismarckplatzfest can be stylishly combined with a stroll through Landshut's famous old town and a climb to Trausnitz Castle. Those looking for a seat in the festival area should arrive early on Saturday evening.
