Six days of wine village in Bielefeld's Old Town
Have you always wanted to taste six German wine regions for six days straight without traveling far? In Bielefeld, that's possible every September. The Bielefeld Wine Market transforms the Old Town around Alter Markt, Altstädter Kirchplatz, and Niedernstraße into a dense, lively wine village — almost 40 winemakers from Germany's most important growing regions will be present, offering tastings, sales by the glass, and the typical, slightly exuberant late-summer atmosphere that belongs to a predominantly South German wine festival.
The selection principle is clear: the most important German wine regions are represented — Mosel (Riesling specialties), Nahe (mineral character), Pfalz (Weissburgunder, Spätburgunder), Rheinhessen (wide range), Württemberg (Lemberger, Trollinger), Ahr Valley (Spätburgunder classics), Baden, and Rheingau. Each winemaker runs their own stand — you talk directly to the producer, not an intermediary.
Bielefeld has been committed to sustainable wine market standards for years: wine glasses instead of disposable cups, a deposit system, regionally sourced food. The stands themselves are classic wooden wine market stalls, no plastic, no excessive sponsor advertising. For those who don't like wine, there are non-alcoholic wine alternatives — most winemakers now offer de-alcoholized versions.
Around the wine stands, there are food stalls offering Flammkuchen from wood-fired ovens, cheese platters from regional farm dairies, Bratwurst, pulled pork, and candied almonds. Late summer classics. Bielefeld restaurants in the Old Town often expand their outdoor seating, making it possible to have a seated meal with wine from the market.
A tradition for years: The German Wine Princess personally comes to Bielefeld for the opening — a tradition that makes the event visible beyond the region and lends the event official dignity.
Bielefeld is an independent city in the administrative district of Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, with around 335,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in Ostwestfalen. The historic Old Town around the Altstädter Nicolaikirche serves as the stage for the wine market. Bielefeld is easily accessible via the A2 motorway and the ICE high-speed train connection between Hanover and Dortmund — many visitors come from Paderborn, Münster, Detmold, and Osnabrück.
The 2026 edition starts on Tuesday, September 1st, and runs for six days until Sunday, September 6th. The Old Town becomes an open-air wine hall — stalls, standing tables, and the typical murmur of a wine market atmosphere that unfolds on warm late summer evenings between the historic houses.
Winemakers from Mosel, Nahe, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Württemberg, and the Ahr Valley will be represented — supplemented by stalls from Baden and Rheingau. Fresh white wine, sparkling wine, young Federweißer, or full-bodied red wine — the selection covers the spectrum of current German wine production. Non-alcoholic alternatives are available at most stands.
By train to Bielefeld Hauptbahnhof, then a 10-minute walk to the Old Town. By car via the A2 (Bielefeld-Zentrum exit). Parking garages in the city center.
Free admission. Deposit for wine glasses at the stands. No table reservations possible — standing tables and seats in the squares are freely available.
