Free Bielefeld family action day with stamp pass rally between Kunsthalle and Sparrenburg
Once a year, the Bielefeld city center transforms into a playful discovery tour: On Sunday, July 5, 2026, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., Bielefeld Marketing organizes the family action day "Der Teuto ruft!". The idea: With a stamp pass in hand, families walk an approximately 3.5-kilometer route with five stations from the Kunsthalle sculpture park up to the Sparrenburg — collecting stamps, solving riddles, and winning prizes along the way.
The route leads through the cultural heart of the city, connecting established sights with the new Wissenswerkstadt:
Starting point with information booths, children's planting activities, and hands-on workshops from the Kunsthalle's studio. Creative stations for young artists.
The city's new science experience center — also home to the Bielefeld Tourist Information. Science experiments and interactive stations.
In the Old Town church park, the Leineweber Monument commemorates Bielefeld's textile industry past. Tangible city history with a riddle station.
Activities including face painting, nature conservation information, and ranger talks about the surrounding Teutoburg Forest.
The grand finale: the medieval Sparrenburg high above the city — with free tower ascent and panoramic views over Bielefeld and the Teutoburg Forest valley.
Each station offers a stamp — anyone collecting at least four out of five stamps is entered into the prize draw. Stamp passes and folded maps are available free of charge at the Tourist Information (Wilhelmstraße 3) or for download online at bielefeld.jetzt/teutoruft.
The organizer is Bielefeld Marketing GmbH, the city's tourism and marketing agency. The action day is part of the city's extensive summer program and complements the Sparrenburgfest (July/August) and the Bielefelder Nachtansichten, also organized by Bielefeld Marketing. The goal: to introduce families (and adults without children) to the city center in a playful way, while also highlighting the connection between the city and the Teutoburg Forest.
The independent city of Bielefeld, with almost 335,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Ostwestfalen-Lippe and is located in the Teutoburg Forest. It is known for the Sparrenburg (one of the most important castle ruins in North Rhine-Westphalia), the University of Bielefeld with its Brutalist main building, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld with its high-caliber modern art collection, and the Botanical Garden. The internet joke "Bielefeld doesn't exist" has paradoxically brought the city nationwide recognition — the Teuto-ruft action day is one of the city's responses: Yes, there is much to discover here.
Bielefeld Marketing is organizing the annual family action day again: a 3.5 km stamp pass rally with five stations through the city center. Each station features hands-on activities — face painting, planting activities, science experiments, city history. Those who collect at least four stamps are entered into a prize draw for family tickets to the Sparrenburgfest and children's concert tickets. Free admission, tower ascent at Sparrenburg also free.
~3.5 km, signposted with black "Stadtrundgang" (City Tour) signs.
Free admission. All stations are free, including the Sparrenburg tower ascent. Stamp passes are free at the Tourist Information or available for download online.
By train: Bielefeld Hauptbahnhof (main station), approx. 5 min. walk to the city center and the Kunsthalle starting station. By car: A2 exit Bielefeld-Zentrum or Bielefeld-Süd, parking garages in the city center.
Admission is completely free. The Sparrenburg tower ascent is also free on the action day.
Stamp passes are available free of charge:
Approximately 3.5 km from the Kunsthalle to the Sparrenburg, with an uphill climb at the end. Sturdy footwear recommended. Route marked by black "Stadtrundgang" (City Tour) signs.
Start early — if you want to collect all five stamps at a leisurely pace and participate in the workshops at each station, you'll need 3-4 hours. Afterwards, the café at the Sparrenburg invites you for a break with a view.
