Annual marksmen's festival of the Bielefeld Marksmen's Society, founded in 1831, at Johannisberg
Bielefeld, with around 340,000 inhabitants, is the seventh-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the economic and university center of the Detmold administrative district and the main hub of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region. Nestled between the Teutoburg Forest and the Senne, the city is characterized by a mix of industrial history (Dr. Oetker, Schüco, Seidensticker), university life (Bielefeld University), and an unusually dense network of clubs. Marksmen's clubs have played a central social role here since the 19th century.
The Bielefeld Marksmen's Society was founded in 1831, making it one of the city's oldest marksmen's associations. The club's headquarters are located at the shooting range grounds at Johannisberg 5 in eastern Bielefeld — nestled in a hilly landscape on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The society cultivates both traditional shooting sports (air rifle, small-caliber, large-caliber) and social club life. The annual marksmen's festival on the Pentecost weekend is the highlight.
The festival in 2026 will take place on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7. Saturday from 2:00 p.m.: Assembly of the battalion on the club grounds, followed by the Beer King shooting — a traditional, humorous variant of the King shooting, where beer mugs or beer symbols mark the trophy status. Sunday: joint breakfast for club members and friendly guests, followed by the actual King shooting until 6:00 p.m. — the highlight of the festival with the crowning of the new Marksmen King / Queen.
The shooting range Am Johannisberg 5 is located in eastern Bielefeld, at the transition from the city area to the Teutoburg Forest. Clubhouse, shooting ranges, festival meadow — one of the typical Ostwestfalen marksmen's range facilities located close to the forest. Friendly clubs from the surrounding area traditionally attend as guests, and the festival has the character of a familiar, regional gathering — far removed from the large-event character of some marksmen's festivals in other cities.
Bielefeld has several marksmen's clubs, each with its own character: from the Citizens' Marksmen's Club in the city center to the district clubs in Brackwede, Sennestadt, or Heepen. The Bielefeld Marksmen's Society 1831 is the oldest city marksmen's association within this spectrum. Anyone who wants to get to know the marksmen's tradition in Ostwestfalen will find an authentic example here — driven by volunteerism, intergenerational connection, and strong club patriotism.
Visitors to the festival can combine their trip with sightseeing in Bielefeld: Sparrenburg Castle as a landmark, the Farmhouse Museum in Senne, the Hermannsweg trail across the Teutoburg Forest (start and end point near Bielefeld), the Botanical Garden on Johannisberg in the immediate vicinity of the Marksmen's Society. A long Pentecost weekend can be well spent in Ostwestfalen.
Classic two-day marksmen's festival of the Bielefeld Marksmen's Society 1831 — Battalion assembly, Beer King shooting, King shooting, and crowning in a convivial atmosphere.
