Design market in the brick industrial courtyard
The BESONDERS MARKT has existed since 2006 and is one of the oldest continuously running design markets in Germany. The organizer is the Hamburg-based agency m&k markt & kultur, in cooperation with the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg. The venue is the Museum der Arbeit on Wiesendamm in Barmbek-Nord, one of the city's most beautiful industrial monuments — brick, high halls, courtyard.
Over 100 exhibitors set up their stalls in the museum's halls and corridors. The spectrum is broad but consistently curated: young fashion labels from Hamburg, jewelry designers, bookbinders and stationers, natural cosmetic manufacturers, small food producers (chocolate, honey, tea, pesto), spirit distillers, home accessories made of wood, ceramics, and textiles. The selection follows the principle of "handmade or produced under one's own responsibility" — no resellers.
The market takes place several times a year — usually in spring (March/April) and autumn (October/November). The 2026 spring edition will be held on March 22. The format has been successful for two decades because it fulfills the promise of direct encounters with the creators: here, the designer herself sells and can explain how a bag was made or why this pesto tastes so good.
Barmbek-Nord is a densely populated, mixed residential neighborhood in the Hamburg-Nord district, directly at the Barmbek suburban train station. The Museum der Arbeit is located three minutes from the station on Wiesendamm — one of Hamburg's most characteristic industrial backdrops, which has also served as a setting for neighborhood festivals, concerts, and the BESONDERS MARKT for years.
The market occupies the entire museum area — main hall, gallery, cross hall, and courtyard. Exhibitors set up from early morning; the market opens at 10 a.m. Experience shows that the highest visitor traffic is between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.; those who want to shop undisturbed should come either right at 10 a.m. or around 4 p.m.
Catering is integrated into the market itself: small food trucks in the courtyard, a café in the museum foyer, plus several street food vendors who fit the market concept with their own line. The Museum der Arbeit can be visited during the market day at a special rate.
The complete list of participating designers and manufacturers will be published in the weeks before the market on besonders-hamburg.com.
