Neighborhood festival with Salsa, Capoeira, and Taiko
"Barmbek schwingt" is the annual courtyard festival of the Museum der Arbeit in Barmbek-Nord, Hamburg-Nord district. The venue is Bert-Kaempfert-Platz at the museum's entrance — an open space between brick architecture and Wiesendamm, which transforms into a festival stage and dance floor once a year. The festival combines the museum's industrial history program with the multicultural reality of the neighborhood.
In the afternoon, the festival begins with a family focus: a mobile printing workshop, a small carousel, spinning wheel demonstrations, puppet theater, face painting for children. From the late afternoon onwards, dance offerings take center stage: a Salsa lesson for all levels, which was already a magnet the previous year. Afterwards, Capoeira groups, Ukrainian dance ensembles, Argentinian Tango, and Taiko drummers alternate on the square.
Around 7:30 PM, the main stage takes over. In 2025, the Duncan Townsend Trio was the guest — known for collaborations with big names in the German music scene. The musical profile varies each year between Jazz, Soul, World Music, and Pop. The atmosphere remains relaxed, with everyone standing, sitting, or dancing.
Barmbek-Nord is one of Hamburg's most densely populated and mixed neighborhoods. Located in the Hamburg-Nord district, it combines 1920s brick architecture, social democratic housing policy history, and a very broad history of migration. "Barmbek schwingt" turns all of this into an open neighborhood festival — free, low-threshold, multilingual.
The festival follows its established rhythm: opening in the afternoon with family and interactive stations, followed by dance pedagogical units (Salsa for everyone), then guest performances by local groups with cultural diversity — Capoeira, Tango, Taiko, Ukrainian dance. In the evening, a live band takes over.
The Bert-Kaempfert-Platz in front of the Museum der Arbeit becomes an open stage. The program will be detailed on the museum's website in the weeks leading up to the event. The courtyard festival is traditionally part of the "Strassenfeste" (street festivals) of the Hamburg-Nord district.
Program 2026 will be announced in the weeks before the event. Based on experience, it will follow this structure:
