Neighbourhood street festival in Altona-Nord since 2001
The Bernstorffstraßenfest has existed since 2001 and is one of Hamburg's most characteristic street festivals. The organizer is the association VIVA LA BERNIE e.V., which organizes the festival non-commercially, by residents for residents. Bernstorffstraße is located in the border area between Altona-Nord and St. Pauli – a quieter, rent-sensitive axis away from the touristy Reeperbahn.
Programmatically, the festival focuses on Hamburg Hip-Hop acts, DJs from the neighbourhood, Soul and Reggae sets. During the day, there is a flea market; residents set up their stalls in the courtyards and at the entrances of the houses. The culinary offerings range from falafel and vegan bowls to classic bratwurst and cocktails from pop-up bars.
Unlike the commercial street festivals in Hamburg, the Bernstorffstraßenfest benefits from its location between Altona-Nord and St. Pauli – urban character, culturally mixed, with a clear anti-gentrification note in the stage statements. If you want to see Hamburg's off-scene, this is the place to be.
The Bernstorffstraßenfest 2026 takes place on Saturday, July 4, on the closed-off Bernstorffstraße. As every year, residents, Hamburg's off-scene, and visitors from all over the city gather for Hamburg's neighbourhood celebration with a clear anti-commercial profile.
S/U-Bahn Holstenstraße (S11/S21/S31) or Reeperbahn, a 5–10 minute walk. Arriving by car is complicated due to road closures.
