Advent Season in Altona
When the fairy lights are switched on between Altona Station and Spritzenplatz at the end of November, the Advent season in Altona is officially opened. The Altona-Ottensen Christmas Market extends along the Mercado shopping centre and Ottenser Hauptstraße — a continuous, approximately 800m long Christmas street with over 50 stalls.
International Culinary Delights
What distinguishes the Altona-Ottensen market from many other Hamburg Christmas markets is its international character. In addition to classic North German specialities — kale with fried potatoes, mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle — there is white mulled wine, vegan currywurst, and specialities from Ottensen's diverse communities, including Polish, Turkish, Asian, and South American cuisine.
Children's Programme
Families will find a particularly packed programme here: carousel, Witch Knickebein (participatory music-making), puppet theatre with its own children's stage, Gnome Hut (where children can sell their homemade items), and on December 6th, a visit from St. Nicholas.
Ottensen and Altona-Altstadt
The market connects two Hamburg districts in the Altona borough: Altona-Altstadt at Altona Station and Ottensen. Ottensen has been Hamburg's gentrification-tested creative quarter for decades — with its own identity, small bookshops, cafés, and workshops. The Christmas market reflects this mix.
Accessible and Well-Connected
The market is step-free. The nearest public toilet is in the adjacent Mercado shopping centre. Excellent transport links: S-Bahn and U-Bahn Altona directly at the market.
