A Festival That Turns the Street into a Stage
For years, STAMP has been the international highlight of altonale, the major district festival in Altona. For three days, acrobats, dancers, street theatre collectives, and performance artists from over twenty nations gather in the Altona-Altstadt district — around the Platz der Republik, in the park and street spaces between Bahnhof Altona and Mercado. The concept is radically democratic: everything outdoors, everything free, everything in the city.
Program: Stage, Intervention, City
The program is divided into four areas: "Theatre, Dance, and Circus" on the main stages at Platz der Republik; "Interaction and Intervention" as site-specific actions in the street space; "Urban Art" with live painting, installations, and performances; as well as a dedicated "Kids Space" and a "Teens Stage" for young audiences. STAMP thus covers the entire spectrum of contemporary street art — from classic acrobatics to participatory urban art.
International Companies, Local Stories
Each year, the festival invites major companies from France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Scandinavia, as well as newcomers from Germany and small collectives from the Hamburg scene. Artistic direction has been in the hands of Hilke Geppert since 2025, who consistently focuses the program on pluralism and urban relevance.
District of Altona as a Stage
Altona, with around 280,000 inhabitants, is Hamburg's third-largest district and one of the most culturally dense. The Platz der Republik in front of the former Altona train station, Max-Brauer-Allee, and the neighbourhoods of Ottensen form a walkable festival space during STAMP — you can move from one performance to the next all day long.
