Klettgau Wine Culture Since 1959
The Erzingen Wine Festival is one of Southern Germany's most traditional wine festivals. Erzingen, a district of the Klettgau municipality in the far southwest of Baden-Württemberg — right on the Swiss border and just a few kilometers from Schaffhausen — is one of Baden-Württemberg's westernmost wine-growing regions. The Klettgau slopes produce wines from Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder, Riesling, and Gutedel — the latter a specialty connecting the growing region with Northern Switzerland and Markgräflerland.
68th Edition 2026 — Winegrowers' Parade Highlight
The 68th edition in 2026 traditionally falls on the 3rd weekend of September (expected September 19 and 20, 2026). For decades, the venue has been the Erzingen primary school with its adjacent schoolyard, the festival tent, and the main street. The highlight is the grand Winegrowers' Parade on Sunday at 2 PM, organized by local clubs, float builders, and music groups. Over 30 themed floats — from the historic Klettgau wine press to themes from Klettgau legends to contemporary humorous contributions — parade through Erzingen.
Wine Princess Crowning — Secret Until the Ceremony
One of Erzingen's special rituals is the Wine Princess Crowning on Saturday evening. The identity of the new Wine Princess remains strictly secret and is only revealed during the festive crowning ceremony in the festival tent — usually a young Klettgau citizen from a winegrowing family. She will represent the Erzingen Wine Cooperative at events and trade fairs in the following year. The crowning is staged by the festival host, the municipal council, and the chairman of the Wine Cooperative.
Festival Tent Program and Catering
In the festival tent, a festival band and a cover band alternate on Saturday, while a dance band takes over on Sunday evening. Monday evening features the traditional children's festival with a craftsmens' supper — a family event where Erzingen schoolchildren perform songs and celebrate the festival weekend with their parents at long tables. Catering is provided by local clubs — Musikverein Erzingen, Schützenverein, Sportverein, Landfrauen, as well as the Wine Cooperative itself with wine service in several categories.
Klettgau and Erzingen — Wine and Border Region
Klettgau, with around 7,500 inhabitants, is located in the Waldshut district on the German-Swiss border. Erzingen, with around 2,800 inhabitants, is the largest of the seven Klettgau districts and the municipality's winegrowing center. The Klettgau vineyards stretch along the south-facing slopes overlooking the Swiss Randen — a perfect ripening climate that the Romans already utilized for viticulture. Besides the Klettgau Carnival (Fasnet), the Wine Festival is the community's main social event, attracting visitors from Baden-Württemberg, Switzerland (Schaffhausen, Zurich), and the High Rhine region.
