Bric-a-brac, treasures, and curiosities for May 1st in Hamburg-Ottensen
When Hamburg residents celebrate the start of the flea market season on May 1st, Ottensen is the center of action. The altonale Spring Flea Market opens its stalls from 9 AM to 4 PM along Ottenser Hauptstraße, as well as in Mercado and on the Mercado parking deck — three interconnected venues that allow for a long stroll.
The motto is clear: "Art, kitsch, curiosities, and useful second-hand items." Here, private individuals clear out their attics and basements, local artists present their work, and furniture, books, vinyl, dishes, and clothing change hands. Those with a keen eye will find real treasures among the stalls.
A special feature is the dedicated Children's Flea Market inside the Mercado shopping center. Here, children sell their own items — toys, books, clothes. It's more than just bric-a-brac: the little ones practice trading, parents get a break, and everyone has fun.
Ottensen, located in the Altona district, is considered one of Hamburg's most vibrant neighborhoods. Cafés, bars, small shops, and creative businesses define its character. Ottenser Hauptstraße is a pedestrian zone outside of market hours, which is why the flea market works so well here: you stroll from stall to stall, can refuel at one of the many cafés, and watch the hustle and bustle from the corner of your eye.
Behind the Spring Flea Market is altonale GmbH, which has been organizing festivals and neighborhood culture in Altona for decades. Renting a stall helps fund altonale's cultural work through the stall fees — so the market also contributes to the neighborhood.
The Spring Flea Market on May 1st, 2026, marks the beginning of Hamburg's flea market season. Three venues merge into one: Ottenser Hauptstraße as the central axis, the Mercado shopping center with the children's flea market on the ground floor, and the Mercado parking deck, which is converted into a market area for the day.
Stand registration is handled through marktundkultur.de, altonale's official allocation agency. With their stall fees, sellers support the cultural neighborhood work of altonale GmbH.
Stand bookings via marktundkultur.de.
S-Bahn lines S1/S11/S2/S31 to Altona, then a 5-minute walk. Located directly at the station. By car: difficult due to May Day and road closures — public transport is better.
Free. Stalls can be booked at marktundkultur.de.
Arriving early is worthwhile — the best items are often gone before 11 AM. If you're looking for the children's flea market: it's on the ground floor of Mercado.
