Hamburg-Altona as a Stage

The altonale is Hamburg's largest cultural festival beyond the Reeperbahn festivals and a central district format in the Altona district. Since 1999, the festival has transformed the districts of Altona-Altstadt and Ottensen into an open stage for ten days in mid-June — a consistent answer to the question of how a district can present its own culture in public space.

Platz der Republik as Festival Hub

The festival center is the Platz der Republik directly in front of Altona City Hall. Stages, readings, discussions, and concerts converge here — the square functions as the physical heart from which the festival radiates into the district. However, the actual program is spread decentrally across numerous venues: churches, theatre halls, galleries, cafés, squares.

Seven Genres Under One Roof

Programmatically, the altonale covers the entire spectrum of cultural practice:

  • Music — Open-air concerts, concert evenings in churches and halls, singer-songwriters, and Hamburg bands
  • Theatre — Established Altona stages present special programs
  • Film — Film series at the Zeise Kinos
  • Art — Art mile on Christianswiese with local artists
  • Literature — Readings with Hamburg authors and guests
  • Dance — Performances in public spaces
  • STAMP Festival — "Street Arts Melting Pot", three days of international street art (acrobatics, performance, circus) on Altona's squares

The altonale Flea Market

One of the most popular festival modules is the altonale flea market — one of Hamburg's largest second-hand markets. Between bargain furniture and designer pieces from Altona cellars, a unique micro-event unfolds within the festival program.

"Pay what you want"

A programmatic special feature is the admission model: Many events follow the "Pay what you want" logic — visitors pay what they feel the respective offering is worth. This consistently maintains the altonale's accessible character.

200,000 Visitors, Democratic Festival

Over the ten days, the altonale counts a total of around 200,000 visitors. The organizer is altonale GmbH, located at Max-Brauer-Allee 16. The festival sees itself, in its own words, as a "festival in public space that makes artistic processes, attitudes, and discourses directly experienceable." The 2026 edition runs under the motto "Vor aller Augen" (In Plain Sight) and deepens precisely this claim of public visibility for cultural practice.

altonale — edition 2026

The 2026 altonale runs from June 12 to 21 under the motto "Vor aller Augen" (In Plain Sight). Ten days of festival of cultural diversity in Hamburg-Altona — Platz der Republik as the center, decentralized venues in Altona-Altstadt and Ottensen, STAMP festival, altonale flea market, and art mile. "Pay what you want".

The 2026 altonale, under the motto "Vor aller Augen", focuses on the question of the visibility of cultural practice in public space. Performances, exhibitions, and discussions will be made accessible throughout the Altona district — deliberately low-threshold, often free or on a "Pay what you want" basis.

The STAMP festival for street art traditionally takes place in the last third of the altonale and brings together international acrobatics, performance, and circus ensembles in Altona's squares. The altonale flea market — one of Hamburg's largest second-hand markets — will take place on one weekend; the exact date will be announced in May 2026.
