Christmas market with ice rink and light installations in the Michael Ende Kurpark
The Christkindlmarkt Garmisch-Partenkirchen was moved a few years ago from Richard Strauss Square to the spacious Michael Ende Kurpark. The classic market square event has evolved into a comprehensive winter concept: "Winter im Park" combines a market of stalls, an ice rink, and light art into a multi-week winter experience in the heart of the Olympic community.
Artistic light installations transform the Michael Ende Kurpark into a winter fairy tale. Illuminated paths lead between the market stalls, past mulled wine huts, gingerbread stands, and workshops of regional artisans. The Kurpark is named after the writer Michael Ende, who grew up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – the atmosphere suits the narrator of "Momo".
A highlight of the winter concept is the 300 m² ice rink (15 × 20 m). It can be used by all visitors for ice skating; Eisstockschießen (Bavarian curling) is offered for groups. Ice skates can be rented on-site.
A special feature compared to classic Christmas markets: the varied evening program with local bands, DJs, and performers. The regular lineup from past seasons included:
For families, there is face painting and glitter tattoos.
Over 30 exhibitors offer regional handicrafts, glassblowing, felt art, candied almonds, Christmas tree decorations, leather goods, and alpine delicacies. Mulled wine, punch, and hot chocolate are served in the huts, along with bratwurst, potato pancakes, chestnuts, Käsespätzle, and Kasspatzen.
The market is located in the center of the Bavarian market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district (Upper Bavaria, Werdenfelser Land), at the foot of the Alpspitze and Zugspitze mountains. Its location makes the market a popular stop for winter sports enthusiasts who visit the Garmisch Classic ski area, the Hausberg massif, or the Christmas market after a day of skiing.
The upcoming season starts on November 20, 2026, and ends on January 5, 2027. The market thus spans the entire Advent and Christmas season into the new year again. The ice rink will be usable throughout the season, and the evening program will be published on the GaPa Tourism website and may be updated seasonally.
In the Kurpark, the stalls are open daily from 12 PM to 9 PM. Mulled wine, bratwurst, candied almonds, and alpine specialties are on offer, as well as handicrafts from the Werdenfelser Land. Limited opening hours on Christmas Eve (10 AM–2 PM) and New Year's Eve (12 PM–5 PM), closed on December 25.
The 300 m² ice rink (15 × 20 m) is set up centrally in the Kurpark. Ice skating for individuals and families, Eisstockschießen for groups by reservation.
