The largest historical city festival in Brandenburg — 33rd edition
Bernau near Berlin is the district capital of Barnim, located directly northeast of Berlin and reachable by S-Bahn line S2 from Berlin's city center in 35 minutes. With around 41,000 inhabitants and a rich city history as a former Hanseatic city, Bernau is one of Brandenburg's most distinctive medium-sized towns. The medieval city wall with its towers (Steintor, Hungerturm, Pulverturm) is almost completely preserved to this day — a rarity in Northern Germany.
The name "Hussitenfest" refers to a historical triumph: in 1432, the people of Bernau repelled an attack by Hussite troops from the Kingdom of Bohemia — according to legend, with "Bernauer Bier" (Bernau beer), which put the Hussites into a deep sleep. This episode has been deeply inscribed in the city's memory and has been the occasion for the annual city festival since 1993. The Hussitenfest thus combines historical remembrance with contemporary urban culture.
The festival begins on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 4 PM with the official opening at the Steintor — the medieval city gate and landmark of the city. At 7:30 PM, the Orchestra of the State Police of Brandenburg will play an opening concert, followed by an ABBA tribute show. On Saturday at 11 AM, the grand historical parade will march through the city center. In the evening, Corvus Corax — the internationally renowned medieval folk-rock band from Berlin/Brandenburg — will perform.
Throughout the weekend, a variety of program points will take place: knight fights on the city fortifications, jugglers and historical crafts in the city center, concerts of various genres on the market square, a funfair with rides, an art market, a children's area, and international street food. The main sponsors are Sparkasse Barnim and Stadtwerke Bernau. Admission to the entire city festival is free. Contact: [email protected], Tel. 03338 365-310.
