District festival by the Kulturinitiative Coerde — Free admission
Münster, with almost 320,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Münsterland region in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is primarily known externally as a cycling city and university city. However, beyond the historic old town around Prinzipalmarkt and the Cathedral, there are districts with their own, entirely different identities. Coerde, located north of the city centre, is a comparatively young district with just under 12,000 inhabitants — socially mixed, culturally diverse, with numerous initiatives and clubs. Coerde is not the tourist Münster — it is the everyday, vibrant Münster.
Since 2023, Coerdinale has been the district's annual cultural festival. The organiser is Kulturinitiative Coerde e.V., an association that connects Coerde artists, initiatives, and residents. The motto, formulated by organiser Dennis Welpelo: "A festival in Coerde, for Coerde, and with numerous participants from Coerde". This is programmatic — Coerdinale is not a tourist event, but a self-representation of the district.
Since the first edition, the venue has been the Meerwiese Community Centre with its outdoor areas, located at Schmalkalder Weg 6 in the Coerde residential area. The centre serves as a meeting point for clubs, language courses, and district activities throughout the year; on the day of Coerdinale, it transforms into a festival ground with a stage, a stall area, and a children's corner.
2026 marks the 4th edition of Coerdinale — Saturday, July 11, from 2:00 PM onwards. The programme runs late into the night: open-air concerts from 6:00 PM, a DJ set by NoMono from 10:00 PM. Previous editions featured artists such as Skuff-Barbie (Rap), the vocal ensemble krk, and the cover band Laksen. In addition, there are workshops for children and adults, hands-on activities, performances by local dance groups, introductory Capoeira sessions, pottery workshops, and improvisation theatre.
A special feature: Coerdinale is broadcast live via SchaufensterRadio on webradio-muenster.de — an initiative that gives the district festival visibility beyond Coerde. Those who cannot attend in person on July 11 can join online. The format is intended as a statement: Coerde claims visibility that the district rarely receives otherwise.
Coerdinale is an example of how a Münster district organises itself culturally through volunteer engagement. The model is transferable — other districts are observing Coerdinale with interest. In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which sometimes overlooks district culture due to its concentration of large cities, initiatives like Kulturinitiative Coerde serve as an important corrective.
Coerdinale 2026 — the fourth edition of the Coerde cultural festival — will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 12:00 AM at the Meerwiese Community Centre in Münster-Coerde. Organised by Kulturinitiative Coerde e.V. Free admission.
