Tip
Wander through the quarter — the best strategy isn't to follow a plan, but to let yourself be drawn from one courtyard to another. That's exactly the point of the format. And bring cash: Most food and drink vendors don't accept card payments.
Celebrate in the Quarter — Münster's Neighbourhood Magic
The 4tel Fest Mauritz-West — or 'Celebrate in the Quarter' for short — is one of Münster's most charming neighbourhood formats. On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Mauritz-West quarter will become an open festival stage for a whole day. The venue isn't a single stage or marketplace, but the entire quarter between the railway, ring road, and Wolbecker Straße: backyards, private gardens, streets, and neighbourhood shops will open their doors and become festival locations.
Decentralised, Non-Commercial, With Heart
The format is deliberately decentralised, non-commercial, and participatory. There are no orchestrated stages, no commercial stalls, no fixed concert slots. Instead, the residents of the quarter decide: Whoever wants to open their backyard registers. Whoever wants to make music finds a spot. Whoever wants to hold a flea market spreads blankets in their front garden. It's a festival by the neighbourhood for the neighbourhood — and quite 'a bit improvised', as the organisers themselves put it. That's precisely where its charm lies.
Mauritz-West — Münster's Student Quarter
Mauritz-West is one of Münster's central city districts, east of the city centre, situated between the railway line (Wolbecker Bahn) to the south, the inner ring road (Stadtgrabenring) to the west, and Wolbecker Straße to the north. The quarter is diverse — with a strong student presence (University of Münster, hello!), but also home to families, creative individuals, and older residents. The small-scale architecture with its backyards, apartment buildings, and narrow streets makes the quarter the perfect setting for a decentralised festival.
What's Happening Where?
The 2026 programme will be shaped by the registrations — and thus only fully visible closer to the festival start. Expect:
- Music in backyards — small bands, singer/songwriters, jam sessions
- Dance and performance — students from the art academy, independent dancers
- Games and children's activities — families opening their yards for kids' programmes
- Culture — readings, short plays, exhibitions in apartments
- Flea markets — on blankets in backyards and front gardens
- Activities in neighbourhood shops — the small, owner-run businesses in the quarter will participate
An online map on 4telfest.de will show all the venues and their programmes on the festival day.
Registration and Participation
Anyone wishing to register their own contribution can do so from April 1 to May 10, 2026, via the homepage. A primary target group is the residents of the quarter — but initiatives, associations, and artists from outside are also welcome if they want to use the quarter as a stage. The registration form is straightforward: a photo of the venue, a programme idea, and that's it.
Why This Festival Is Special
In an era where neighbourhood festivals are often commercialised and meticulously planned, the 4tel Fest proves that things can be done differently. Residents shape their own district — and create a day that isn't organised from the top down. If you live in Münster and want to get to know the quarter, or if you're coming from the surrounding area and want to experience Münster's neighbourhood culture: June 13 is the perfect opportunity.
