Whit Monday opening of the historic windmill with tours, milling demonstrations, and mill café
The Elisabeth Mill is a traditional Dutch windmill in Selsingen and a landmark of the town. With its distinctive silhouette and characteristic gallery, it shapes the townscape. The mill is preserved as a technical monument and is maintained voluntarily by the Selsingen Mill Association.
German Mill Day has been organized annually on Whit Monday since 1994 by the German Society for Millkunde and Mill Preservation (DGM) nationwide. Hundreds of water and windmills open to the public on this day. The Elisabeth Mill Selsingen is one of the participating mills in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.
When the wind is favorable, the mill is put into operation. The sails turn, the millstones are driven, and grain is ground into flour. The millers of the association explain the milling process, the sail mechanics, and the historical significance of windmill operation.
Guided tours through the mill's interior provide insights into the technology of a Dutch windmill: the rotating cap, sail mechanics, millstones, sifter, sieve, and hoisting gear. The mill's floors are accessible via narrow stairs, allowing visitors to experience the facility from top to bottom.
A small mill café with coffee, tea, and homemade cake invites visitors to linger. The proceeds benefit the mill association and the preservation of the technical monument. Visitors can enjoy the café's offerings outside at the foot of the mill or, in bad weather, inside the mill room.
The Elisabeth Mill welcomes visitors throughout Whit Monday. Tours, milling demonstrations, and café service will be offered alternately.
German Mill Day connects the Elisabeth Mill with hundreds of mills across Germany that open on the same day.
The exact opening hours and program for 2026 will be published by the Selsingen Mill Association in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
