About German Mill Day Elisabeth Mill

The Elisabeth Mill in Selsingen opens its doors on May 25, 2026 (Whit Monday) for the nationwide German Mill Day. The historic Dutch windmill is a landmark of the town and a technical monument. The Selsingen Mill Association offers guided tours of the mill technology, milling demonstrations, explanations of windmill operation, and a small mill café with coffee and homemade cake. German Mill Day has been held nationwide on Whit Monday since 1994, making the technical heritage of milling accessible to the public.

Elisabeth Mill as a Selsingen Landmark

The Elisabeth Mill is a traditional Dutch windmill in Selsingen and a landmark of the town. With its distinctive silhouette and characteristic gallery, it shapes the townscape. The mill is preserved as a technical monument and is maintained voluntarily by the Selsingen Mill Association.

Nationwide German Mill Day

German Mill Day has been organized annually on Whit Monday since 1994 by the German Society for Millkunde and Mill Preservation (DGM) nationwide. Hundreds of water and windmills open to the public on this day. The Elisabeth Mill Selsingen is one of the participating mills in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

Milling Demonstrations with Wind Power

When the wind is favorable, the mill is put into operation. The sails turn, the millstones are driven, and grain is ground into flour. The millers of the association explain the milling process, the sail mechanics, and the historical significance of windmill operation.

Guided Tours of the Mill Technology

Guided tours through the mill's interior provide insights into the technology of a Dutch windmill: the rotating cap, sail mechanics, millstones, sifter, sieve, and hoisting gear. The mill's floors are accessible via narrow stairs, allowing visitors to experience the facility from top to bottom.

Mill Café

A small mill café with coffee, tea, and homemade cake invites visitors to linger. The proceeds benefit the mill association and the preservation of the technical monument. Visitors can enjoy the café's offerings outside at the foot of the mill or, in bad weather, inside the mill room.
