International Film Festival for Student and Emerging Filmmakers in Berlin
The Berlin Student Film Festival (BSFF) was founded in 2016 as Berlin's only student film festival with a decidedly international audience. It is supported by kulturspace deutschland e.V., a non-profit platform connecting art, culture, and education. The festival positions itself as "inclusive, interactive, international" — and describes itself as a "launchpad for first-time and aspiring filmmakers."
BSFF shows films that, according to the festival, "challenge norms, spark discussions, and show the world from the perspective of the next generation." The curatorial focus is not primarily on technical perfection, but on narrative substance — on stories that "advance culture." This clearly distinguishes the festival from established industry platforms like the Berlinale and positions it as a springboard into the international festival circuit.
For the 2026 edition, the BSFF has set three priorities: access, visibility, and opportunity. In plain terms: creating pathways for students and recent graduates to transition from film school into the global discourse. The submission phase for 2026 is open, and the exact festival dates and venues will be announced later in the year.
Behind the BSFF is kulturspace deutschland e.V. — a non-profit organization that, according to its own description, promotes "meaningful exchange through cultural events, educational programs, and artist support." The festival is part of a broader commitment to student and emerging culture in Berlin.
BSFF complements Berlin's already dense film festival landscape with a specifically student perspective. While the Berlinale in February is the major international showcase and FRACTO, achtung berlin, or the interfilm festival each occupy their own niches, the BSFF fills a gap: making visible films created in academic contexts that rarely receive the attention they deserve.
The 2026 edition of the BSFF has been officially announced — the festival has opened the submission phase and activated the platform on the website under "Submit 2026". Dates and venues will be published during 2026.
In terms of content, the festival is focusing on three priorities for 2026: Access, Visibility, and Opportunity. The aim is to provide more concrete support for the transition from film school into the global festival and industry discourse. The supporting organization remains kulturspace deutschland e.V.
