About FriesenKlang-Festival

The FriesenKlang-Festival Varel is a young chamber music festival, initiated by Varel-based pianist Alexander Vorontsov, taking place for the fourth time from June 4th to 7th, 2026. The artistic concept combines classical music with pop, jazz, and improvisational elements, presenting concerts in special, often unusual locations in and around Varel. The theme for the 2026 edition is Nature and Industry – fittingly, concerts will be held in the historic Weberei Varel (weaving mill), at the Mühleteich (mill pond), in Dangast by the Jadebusen (Jade Bay), and in the sculpture garden of Diedel Kloever. Between the musical programs, regional nature experts will offer insights, creating a unique interaction between sound art, landscape, and industrial heritage.

Chamber Music in Special Locations

The FriesenKlang-Festival is the passion project of Alexander Vorontsov, a pianist based in Varel with international concert experience. His aim: to move classical music out of traditional concert halls and bring it to places where it unfolds with new resonance – in industrial monuments, by the water, in sculpture gardens.

Theme 2026: Nature and Industry

The fourth edition is dedicated to the exciting relationship between nature and industry that shapes the Frisian landscape. On one side, the vastness of the Wadden Sea, the Jade Bay, the fields and moors – on the other, the traces of weaving mills, shipyards, and port industries.

Venues

The Weberei Varel on Oldenburger Straße is an architectural landmark of the town and serves as the central venue. The Mühleteich offers an atmospheric open-air stage. Music will be performed in Dangast by the Jadebusen, and the sculpture garden of Varel artist Diedel Kloever will become a resonance space for intimate programs amidst artworks and vegetation.

Program between Classical and Pop

The musical spectrum ranges from classical chamber music (piano, string quartet, art song) to jazz improvisations and crossover projects that translate pop standards into chamber music arrangements. Vorontsov regularly invites guest artists from his international network.

Interaction with Nature Experts

A special feature: Between pieces and in accompanying program blocks, regional nature experts – biologists, ornithologists, farmers – will speak about the Wadden Sea, bird migration, and the changes in the cultural landscape. This creates a thematic link between music, place, and region.

FriesenKlang-Festival — edition 2026

The fourth edition of the FriesenKlang-Festival will take place from June 4th to 7th, 2026, in Varel and its surroundings. Artistic director Alexander Vorontsov dedicates the program to the theme of Nature and Industry, presenting concerts in special locations: the Weberei Varel (weaving mill), the Mühleteich (mill pond), the North Sea resort of Dangast, and the sculpture garden of Diedel Kloever. The musical spectrum combines classical chamber music with jazz, pop arrangements, and improvisation. Between pieces, regional nature experts will speak about the Wadden Sea, bird migration, and the cultural landscape. Individual tickets and festival passes are available through advance booking. The festival positions itself as an exciting bridge-builder between sound art and Frisian identity.

The 2026 edition deepens the concept developed in previous years, bringing classical music into dialogue with the Frisian landscape and its industrial heritage. Vorontsov has curated a program that includes renowned guest artists from Germany and other European countries.

The exact artist and program lineup for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. Proven formats include solo piano concerts, chamber music sets, jazz improvisations, and thematic talk concerts with nature experts.
