Berlin-Grünau Race Course — Olympic History on the Water
The Berlin-Grünau Race Course on the Dahme river in southern Köpenick is one of Germany's most important water sports facilities. Originally laid out in 1880 as a track for the Berliner Ruderverein, it was the venue for the Olympic rowing competitions in 1936. To this day, national and international regattas are held here, including regular World Cup events. The 2,000-meter course with six parallel lanes offers ideal conditions for competitive rowing.
Tradition as a Season Opener
For decades, the Berliner Früh-Regatta has been the first major regatta of the German rowing season in spring. In early to mid-April, the water on the Dahme reaches competition temperature, clubs have completed their winter training, and the Früh-Regatta serves as the first test of form before the summer's main events. The organizer is the Landesruderverband Berlin e.V. (Berlin Rowing Association), which owns the race course.
All Age Groups Competing
- General Class (Men and Women): from single sculls to eights, the main competition at national level
- Juniors (Juniors A and B): an important test regatta for the national junior squad
- Masters: rowers from age group A (27+) up to class K (80+) — popular with senior club teams from all over Germany
- Boat classes from single sculls (Skiff) through double sculls, quadruple sculls, sweep-oared fours to eights
Treptow-Köpenick and the Grünau District
Grünau is located on the southeastern outskirts of Berlin in the Treptow-Köpenick district — a district characterized by water sports, featuring villas and situated between the Dahme river and the Langen See lake. In addition to the race course, there are several historic rowing and sailing clubs, a water sports museum, and the former Olympic Village. Getting to the regatta is easy via the S-Bahn lines S8/S46 (Grünau station), from where it's a ten-minute walk to the grandstand.
