The Berlin brass scene between Big Band, Fanfare and Brass Band
The Berlin Brass Festival is a relatively young movement — started a few years ago as an attempt to bring the heterogeneous Berlin brass scene together under one roof. The genre spectrum ranges from classical Big Bands to contemporary Brass Bands (à la Krach Boom Brass) to fanfares and experimental brass formations. Berlin music schools like the Rückert-Gymnasium and the Berlin School of Music, along with independent ensembles, form the core.
The 2026 festival runs for a whole week (14 to 21 June 2026), with concerts at two main locations: the Evangelisches Johannesstift Spandau on the opening Saturday (in a former deaconess institution with magnificent brick buildings and green courtyards) and the Kulturbrauerei Hof 1 on the closing Saturday (a central district spot in Prenzlauer Berg, a former 19th-century brewery with several courtyards). In between, there are workshops and concerts at other Berlin locations — a truly city-wide programme.
The lineup selection is decidedly local: Big Band Kameleon, Brass Band Rückert-Gymnasium, Einfach Spielen Band, Kapelle B, KAMA Orchestra, Krach Boom Brass Band Berlin 3000, Grande Fanfare, Brass Riot. No international headliner imports, but the Berlin brass scene in its true form — school ensembles, independent Big Bands, experimental collectives from Mitte and Friedrichshain.
From 14 to 21 June 2026, the Berlin Brass Festival takes place with two main open-air concerts and a week of workshops in between. On the opening Saturday (14 June), the Big Band Kameleon will play at the Evangelisches Johannesstift Spandau at 4:45 PM, followed by the Brass Band of the Rückert-Gymnasium at 6:00 PM. On the closing Saturday (21 June), the Kulturbrauerei Hof 1 in Prenzlauer Berg will host a series of performances: Einfach Spielen Band, Kapelle B, KAMA Orchestra, Krach Boom Brass Band Berlin 3000, Grande Fanfare, Brass Riot. Admission is free everywhere.
