Five days of contemporary art in over 100 Berlin institutions
Since 2012, Berlin Art Week has been the annual season-opening format for the Berlin art scene. The week is conceived and coordinated by Kulturprojekte Berlin on behalf of the Senate Department for Culture and Societal Cohesion, co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development. The five days in early September bundle a program that is decentralized throughout the rest of the year: Berlin's over 400 galleries, the major museums, the alternative off-scene with its project spaces — all coordinate their openings and vernissages for the same weekend.
Several Berlin institutions form the backbone of the week. The Hamburger Bahnhof — Nationalgalerie Gegenwart in the Mitte district showcases large-scale exhibitions of contemporary art. The Gropius Bau, the traditional exhibition house on Niederkirchnerstraße, serves as the festival meeting place and main orientation point — with program information, discussions, performances, and a meeting point atmosphere. The Berlinische Galerie in Kreuzberg is dedicated to Berlin art from 1870 to the present day. The former Tempelhof Airport building hosts large-scale special exhibitions.
The highlight is the Featured Night on Thursday (typically from 6 PM to 10 PM), where all participating galleries and spaces open simultaneously — openings, performances, artist talks, after-show parties. It's the night when the Berlin art world is completely out and about. The supplementary Featured Open Call annually offers artists and initiatives the opportunity to become part of the curated program.
Berlin Art Week 2026 from September 9 to 13 brings together over 100 Berlin art institutions for a coordinated program — openings, vernissages, performances, artist talks, discussion formats. Hamburger Bahnhof remains the spatial center, Gropius Bau functions as a meeting place with orientation and event program. The Featured Night on September 11, 2026, from 6 PM to 10 PM, marks the highlight of the week.
