Saarland's Spring Funfair on the Großer Markt of the Baroque Fortress City
The Ostermarkt Saarlouis is the spring version of the traditional Ludwigskirmes: On the same baroque Großer Markt in the heart of the former French fortress city, rides for all ages gather for five days. The funfair kicks off the Saarland open-air season and is considered an important spring meeting point in the Saarlouis district.
The Ostermarkt is traditionally opened on Friday evening with the keg tapping by the Lord Mayor – in 2026, it will be Carsten Quirin who opens the first keg at the "Hornets" beer stand. This officially opens the market for five days.
The offerings range from classic family rides (Ferris wheel, Tarantella, dodgems) to high-thrill rides like "Magic", "Chaos", "Breakdancer", and "Rio". For the youngest visitors, there is the children's carousel, "Ice Road Cars", the Olympia bungee trampoline, and the "KUHNOS-Farm". In total, over 30 showmen are represented.
A Saarlouis specialty is the additional flea market on Monday and Tuesday: Around 60 itinerant traders spread out across the pedestrian zones and Deutsche Straße – clothing, shoes, household goods, jewelry, leather goods, and Easter decorations characterize the scene. This combination of funfair and large flea market is rare in the Saarland.
Tuesday, March 24, 2026, is designated as Children's and Family Day with reduced ride prices. Showmen, the city, and the Hornets carnival club offer targeted family activities.
Saarlouis was founded in 1680 by King Louis XIV according to plans by fortress builder Vauban and is today the district town in the Saarlouis district. The baroque city center with the Großer Markt, the Casemates City, and the preserved fortifications is the ideal backdrop for Saarland's folk festival tradition.
Over 30 showmen, approx. 60 flea market vendors, five days of funfair operations from 2 PM to 10 PM. The Children's and Family Day on March 24 offers special activities for the little visitors.
