Saarland's largest city festival – since 1967 in the heart of the fortress city
Since 1967, the Saarlouiser Emmes has been the free crowning glory of the Saarlouiser Woche – that traditional week of events which, in early June, makes the fortress city of Saarlouis (Saarlouis district) the focal point of the Saarland summer. "Emmes" comes from the local dialect and means something like "truth" or "real thing" – a name that has been the program for over 50 years. The 56th edition will take place in 2026.
The Emmes simultaneously occupies five areas of the Saarlouis city center: the Großer Markt with the main stage, the Kleiner Markt, Französische Straße, Deutsche Straße, and the Altstadt. This creates a festival choreography where you can switch between headline concerts, sing-along stages, DJ sets, and small singer-songwriter corners without leaving the festival grounds. Vegan and vegetarian options are available at almost every stand, alongside the classic Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Lyoner (local sausage), and good, local beer.
The programming is among the most ambitious in Saarland. In 2026, Roberto Blanco, Höhner, Kasalla, Planschemalöör, Milow, and bac will be on stage – a mix of Schlager legend, Cologne carnival rock, Belgian singer-songwriter, and regional newcomers. This combination of mainstream and curated diversity is what distinguishes the Emmes from many smaller city festivals.
Saarlouis was founded in 1680 by Vauban on behalf of Louis XIV as a fortress – the star-shaped layout and the Großer Markt bear witness to this. This French-German dual identity shapes the entire festival: the streets are named Französische Straße and Deutsche Straße, the town hall bears the inscription "Europastadt" (City of Europe), and the event itself attracts a mixed, cross-border audience. Visitors come from Lorraine as well as from Trier, Saarbrücken, or Luxembourg.
The city of Saarlouis places great importance on accessible entrances, wheelchair areas at the stages, a central first-aid station in the town hall (DRK), and continuous security and police presence. On Friday and Saturday, the KVS offers reduced public transport special fares – the organizers' concept for arrival is clear: not by your own car.
The Saarlouiser Emmes 2026 features one of the most ambitious line-ups in its history. Roberto Blanco opens on Thursday, the Cologne band Höhner, Kasalla, and Planschemalöör play on Friday, and Milow and bac close the weekend on Saturday. The event is organized by the city of Saarlouis. Accessible areas and a first-aid station (DRK) are provided.
Regional and local acts will perform on the other stages in Kleiner Markt, Französische Straße, Deutsche Straße, and Altstadt. Exact set times will be published on saarlouiseremmes.de.
Completely free admission. Food, drinks, and amusement rides are paid for directly at the stand.
Train: ICE/RE connections to Saarlouis Hauptbahnhof, then a 10-minute walk to the Großer Markt. By car: A8 to Saarlouis-Mitte. KVS offers special fares on Friday/Saturday. Several paid multi-storey car parks in the city center, as well as free park-and-walk facilities on the outskirts.
Free admission for all three days. Food, drinks, and amusement rides are paid for on-site.
For the main stage at the Großer Markt, it is advisable to secure a spot at least 60 minutes before the headliner. Families will find a quieter program during the day at the Kleiner Markt and in the Altstadt. For those who appreciate it: the mix of French bistro cuisine and Saarland folk festival (Volksfest) is unique in this form in Germany.
