Oberndorf – Industrial Town with Tradition

Oberndorf am Neckar in the Rottweil district is primarily known as an industrial location – the Mauser arms factory and its successor Heckler & Koch are based here. However, anyone visiting the Schuhmarktplatz on a winter Advent weekend discovers a different side of the town: a cozy little center with churches, half-timbered houses, and a close connection between the old town and the Neckar river.

The Market Concept

The Christmas market is jointly organized by the city administration and the local Trade and Commerce Association (HGV). Wooden stalls offering crafts, Christmas decorations, and gift ideas line the Schuhmarktplatz and a signposted route through the city center – from Nikolausplatz via Christkindlesstraße to Engelsplatz. Regional classics dominate the culinary offerings: grilled and sausage specialties, cookies and gingerbread, hot drinks like mulled wine and children's punch.

Family-Friendly Program

The market explicitly operates under the motto of a family-friendly program. Music groups from the region perform on the stage at Nikolausplatz, complemented by a children's carousel, a small petting zoo, and an open bonfire for younger visitors. An additional flea market and toy/model railway swap meet attracts collectors. The mix of traditional Christmas atmosphere, local associations, and family activities defines the market's character.

In the Upper Neckar Valley

Oberndorf is picturesquely nestled in the Upper Neckar Valley, on the border between the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. The Christmas market accordingly draws visitors from the entire Rottweil district and the surrounding districts of Tuttlingen and Schwarzwald-Baar. The market can be combined, for example, with a trip to the neighboring Schramberg Christmas Market or a visit to the historic city center of Rottweil – both just a short drive away.
