The Berkel — the river as a stage
The Berkel-Sommer is one of the most innovative cultural festivals in the Münsterland region — and uses a unique venue: a stage spanning the Berkel river. The river, which flows through Coesfeld and the northwestern Münsterland, serves as a water surface and acoustic amplifier — an extraordinary combination that makes the festival an atmospheric late summer experience. From Saturday, August 29 to Sunday, September 13, 2026, the 6th edition will fill the Coesfeld Castle Park for 16 days.
Opening — the Hansemahl
The season opening takes place on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 6 to 9 PM as the "Hansemahl" — a communal outdoor dinner with a long table in the castle park. Local chefs will serve guests, complemented by regional wine and beer providers. The Hanseatic tradition of Coesfeld (the city was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1342) lends historical depth to the event.
Program Spectrum
Over the 16 days, a dense program of various art forms unfolds:
- Live Bands — Folk, Jazz, Pop, World Music. Acts include PeToRa Trio, Grounded Groove, Joyful Singers, Hornebach Big Band
- Circle Singing and choir performances
- Children's Programs — "Berkelzeit mit den Musik-Hasen" (Berkel Time with the Music Rabbits)
- Literary Readings — hosted by the Coesfeld Senior Network
- Themed Evenings — Summer festival of the refugee initiative with international offerings
Coesfeld Castle Park
The Coesfeld Castle Park is the green heart of the city — a 5-hectare park surrounding the former castle grounds. The Berkel river flows through the park, creating a watery ambiance. During the festival, various areas are used: the main stage over the Berkel, a stage pavilion in the park, and program stations on the castle hill.
Coesfeld & Partner — the Initiative
The organizer is the Coesfeld & Partner city marketing initiative, specifically the "Culture & Leisure" working group. The patron and main sponsor are Stadtwerke Coesfeld, supplemented by regional companies. The concept is clearly citizen-oriented: something for every taste — from children's programs to evening concerts, from readings to themed evenings.
Coesfeld — the Hanseatic City in the Münsterland
Coesfeld is the district capital of the Coesfeld district with approximately 36,000 inhabitants — a historic Hanseatic city in the northwestern Münsterland, about 40 kilometers west of Münster. The city center, with St. Jacob's Church, the town hall, and the castle park, shapes the medieval cityscape. The Berkel-Sommer has been the city's most important cultural event since its first edition in 2021.
