Pentecost program at Northern Germany's largest archaeological park
The Kaiserpfalz Werla near Werlaburgdorf, a district of Schladen-Werla, is more than just a historical site: it is Northern Germany's largest archaeological park. On an extensive area between the Harz mountains and the Brunswick region, traces of the medieval royal palace are made visible, complemented by a modern interpretation concept with paths, shelters, signage, and educational stations.
In the 10th and early 11th centuries, Werla was one of the most important residences of the Ottonian kings. Henry I, Otto I, and their successors used the palace as a residence and administrative center. This short but formative phase of European history left clear traces in Werla, which have been archaeologically uncovered in recent decades.
Pentecost is one of the most important event dates of the year at Werla. In 2026, the program includes guided tours on the park's archaeology, history, and nature, supplemented by an open shelter with barbecue and drinks. Particularly noteworthy are the botanical walks, which are based on the medicinal plant knowledge of Hildegard von Bingen – an unusual combination of medieval spirituality and the plant world of the Werla floodplain.
Admission to the Kaiserpfalz Werla is free – a deliberate cultural policy that makes the park accessible to everyone. Those who want to combine Pentecost with history and nature will find an ideal excursion destination between Brunswick, Wolfenbüttel, and the Harz foothills.
In 2026, the Pentecost program will again follow the established pattern. Exact tour times and topics will be communicated by the municipality of Schladen-Werla and the park before Pentecost.
The connection between archaeological heritage and botanical interpretation is a hallmark of Werla. The Hildegard von Bingen walks make medieval plant knowledge directly tangible.
The exact 2026 program with tour times will be published by the Friends of Kaiserpfalz Werla association and the municipality of Schladen-Werla in the spring.
