Traditional Christmas Market in the Wagner City
Bayreuth is world-famous for the Wagner Festival – but in winter, the Upper Franconian city shows a completely different side: its Advent tradition. The Bayreuth Christmas Market enlivens the central Market Square from the beginning of Advent until just before Christmas Eve, making it one of the most charming Christmas markets in Upper Franconia.
At around 40 wooden stalls, you'll find the classic German Christmas market offerings: handicrafts such as carved nativity figures, glass ornaments, felt goods, and knitwear, alongside culinary specialties – regional gingerbread, roasted almonds, stollen, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and of course, mulled wine in numerous variations.
A special feature of the market is the Bayreuth Christkind: A young woman from Bayreuth is chosen as the Christkind for the season, officially opens the market, and returns several times during Advent to read stories and distribute small surprises to children. This tradition gives the market a very personal character.
During the Christmas Market, the entire Bayreuth city center is transformed: A 7-kilometer-long light installation winds through the pedestrian zone and surrounding streets. The opulent Christmas tree decorations in the market square and side streets enhance the festive atmosphere.
Directly adjacent, at the old tax office, the Bayreuth Winter Village opens until December 31st with rustic huts, mulled wine variations, and its own evening program – a sensible addition when the actual Christmas Market ends on December 23rd.
Bayreuth is an independent city in the administrative district of Upper Franconia in the state of Bavaria. In addition to the festival, the Hermitage, the Margravial Opera House (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Fantaisie Palace are further attractions. The market seamlessly integrates into the city's tradition as a cultural hub.
The 2026 edition follows the format established over many years: Opening on the eve of the first Sunday of Advent by the Bayreuth Christkind, followed by about a month of Advent atmosphere on the Market Square. The exact program with Christkind appearances and storytelling times will be published in autumn 2026 by Bayreuth Marketing & Tourismus.
In parallel, the Winter Village at the old tax office opens with mulled wine variations and an evening program until December 31st.
Exact Christkind dates, stage performances, and opening hours will be published from October 2026 onwards at bayreuth-tourismus.de.
