Three days of city festival in the Upper Lusatian Old Town — Bautzener Frühling from May 29 to 31, 2026
The Bautzener Frühling is the traditional May city festival of the Große Kreisstadt Bautzen in the state of Saxony, in the district of Bautzen. From May 29 to 31, 2026, the squares of the medieval old town — Hauptmarkt, Fleischmarkt, Kornmarkt, Buttermarkt, and Reichenstraße — will open for three days of music, markets, and encounters. The weekend falls on the Pentecost weekend and is the unofficial start to the Bautzen open-air season.
On a total of three stages — the main stage at Hauptmarkt, a stage at Fleischmarkt, and another at Kornmarkt — local and national bands will alternate. The program ranges from East German rock (B1000-Ostrock) and Balkan ska (Gruppa Karl-Marx-Stadt) to reggae (Yellow Cap), classical festival music, and Schlager doubles. The «Parade der Vielfalt» on Saturday morning brings together Bautzen associations, sports, and cultural groups for a colorful parade through the city center.
Saturday is the «Day of Associations»: Associations, federations, and initiatives from the city present their work, offer workshops, and recruit members. On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., a large flea market will stretch along the Fleischmarkt — hobby traders and antique dealers will offer jewelry, records, books, and household items. For families, there will be a carousel, trampolines, a face-painting booth, and the interactive children's theater «Cabinet Fatalia».
Bautzen is the capital of the Sorbian minority. This is also reflected in the food at the spring festival: Sorbian wedding soup, cabbage rolls with cream, Plinsen (pancakes) with quark — but also the ubiquitous Hungarian Lángos, fresh bratwurst from the Lausitz butcher, vegetarian bowls, and ice cream from regional manufacturers. The «Farbe erleben» (Experience Color) art exhibition in the museum courtyard rounds off the program with a visual arts component.
With just under 40,000 inhabitants, Bautzen is the district town of Upper Lusatia — crowned by 17 medieval towers and with one of Saxony's best-preserved old towns. In May, the city shows its friendliest side: the Spree flows under the Friedensbrücke, the cherry blossoms at Ortenburg Castle have faded, and the weather allows for long festival evenings outdoors. The Bautzener Frühling fits into this atmosphere as a Volksfest (folk festival) that primarily celebrates the local character of the city.
From May 29 to 31, 2026, the Bautzen old town will transform into a festival mile over the Pentecost weekend with three stages, a flea market, association presentations, and an art exhibition. More than 50 local and national acts will alternate on the stages — from Balkan ska and reggae to East German rock classics.
The official opening on Saturday at 12 p.m. by Mayor Karsten Vogt with a traditional beer tapping will kick off the main program. Family activities, Sorbian specialties, and free admission make the festival one of the largest in the region.
Continuously on all days: Carousel, trampolines, face-painting booth, «Farbe erleben» art exhibition in the museum courtyard, «Cabinet Fatalia» children's theater, gastronomy with Sorbian dishes and Lángos.
