27th Regional and Crafts Market around the historic Kreuzherrenkloster in Heinsberger Land
When the apple harvest reaches its peak on the first October weekend and the Heinsberger Land is adorned in autumnal colors, the gate opens to one of the most charming farmers' markets in western Rhineland: the 27th Bauernmarkt Haus Hohenbusch. The organizer is the Veranstaltungsgemeinschaft Bauernmarkt auf Hohenbusch e.V., which has made this weekend a fixture in the event calendar of the Heinsberg district since the late 1990s.
The market takes place around Haus Hohenbusch, a former Kreuzherrenkloster from the 13th century. The historic setting with its monastery buildings, meadows, and old trees provides a unique backdrop for the farmers' market, which no hall or city square can offer. The ensemble is located in the Erkelenz district of Hetzerath, just outside the town center.
Erkelenz is located in the district of Heinsberg in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Dutch border and the Selfkant region. The town is part of the Rhenish Mining Area, which is undergoing a comprehensive structural change after the end of lignite mining. Farmers' markets like the one at Hohenbusch strengthen the rural identity and showcase the vibrant farm and craft culture of the region. The Heinsberger Land, with its gentle landscapes, waterways, and historic monasteries, is a hidden gem for day trips.
Since Haus Hohenbusch is located outside the city center and parking is limited, the organizer provides free low-floor shuttle buses with wheelchair ramps. They run every 20 minutes between 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM and serve four stops in Erkelenz: Konrad-Adenauer-Platz (bus station), Aachener Straße, Antwerpener Straße, and Kapellenstraße (Matzerath).
The 27th edition of the Bauernmarkt Haus Hohenbusch takes place on Saturday, October 3rd, and Sunday, October 4th, 2026 — each from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the former Kreuzherrenkloster Haus Hohenbusch, Erkelenz-Hetzerath. Admission: €5 (cash only), children under 15 free. More than 100 exhibitors present regional specialties, farm products, and crafts.
Low-floor buses with wheelchair ramps run every 20 minutes from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM between the stops Konrad-Adenauer-Platz (Erkelenz bus station), Aachener Straße, Antwerpener Straße, Kapellenstraße (Matzerath), and Haus Hohenbusch.
