Spring market with regional asparagus, strawberries, and crafts — the legacy of the traditional Pyrmont Asparagus Festival
The Pyrmont Mai-Markt traces its roots back to the traditional Asparagus Festival, which marked the beginning of spring in the spa town for decades. With the renaming and expansion of the concept, the market has evolved from a pure asparagus festival into a more comprehensive spring market, which continues to focus on regional asparagus but also bundles many other exhibitors and offerings. The event is organized by Bad Pyrmont Tourismus GmbH in cooperation with Stadtmarketing.
May means asparagus season in Lower Saxony. Several vendors from the Lower Saxon and North Rhine-Westphalian asparagus-growing regions — from the Wesertal valley through Münsterland to the Brüggemann asparagus farms in Westphalia — present their white and green spears fresh from the field. Early strawberries from protected cultivation complement the offerings. Visitors can sample at the stands, buy quantities for home cooking, or get recipe ideas.
In addition to agricultural vendors, craftspeople present handmade products: ceramics, woodwork, candles, felt animals, woven baskets, sewn cushions and tablecloths, natural cosmetics. Spring decorations in the form of plants, small shrubs, and bouquets add a colorful touch to Brunnenstraße.
Several snack stands offer classic market specialties — bratwurst, fries, crêpes, cakes, waffles, ice cream — as well as asparagus-related items such as asparagus soup, asparagus with ham, and asparagus salad. Coffee, non-alcoholic spring drinks, and a 'Spritz' or sparkling wine at the stand complete the offerings.
On Sunday, May 17, the shops in Pyrmont's city center will open their doors from 1 PM to 6 PM. The combination of the Mai-Markt and the shopping Sunday makes the day one of the busiest dates in Pyrmont's spring calendar.
A carousel is set up for families with children. Benches and standing tables are distributed throughout Brunnenstraße. The atmosphere is cozy, without mass crowds. Parking in the surrounding parking garages and streets is free or discounted on weekends.
The exact exhibitors will be published by Stadtmarketing shortly before the event. The structure follows the key points of previous years.
