The clay oven in Schwarme is a piece of living folk culture. Unlike most brick ovens that are built into walls, the clay oven is freestanding and particularly original in its construction. The Schwarme village community maintains the oven and uses it multiple times a year on baking days – each time a small celebration for the villagers and guests.

Butter Cake from 2 PM

The highlight of the baking day is the fresh butter cake from the clay oven. Helpers knead dough, heat the oven, and slide the baking sheets into the hot baking chamber. The first butter cake emerges from the oven from 2 PM – its aroma wafts through the village, drawing visitors to the baking area. Fresh butter cake, ideally straight from the oven, is a classic North German cake and evokes memories of family celebrations and village days for many people.
