Bavaria's largest open-air city stage
When the sun sets over the Fugger City at the end of June, one of Southern Germany's most atmospheric city festivals begins in Augsburg's old town. For three days, the Augsburger Sommernächte open up the city centre for music, culinary experiences, and encounters – from Rathausgasse to Maximilianstraße, from Moritzplatz to Martin-Luther-Platz. It is organised by Augsburg Marketing GmbH as part of the Augsburg City Summer.
Programme: 17 stages, 280 acts, all styles
On around 17 stages across the centre, bands and DJs from the region and across Europe play every evening from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. (live music until midnight). The musical spectrum ranges from Funk, Rock, and Pop to Jazz, Hip-Hop, Salsa, and Electro, as well as Indie, organ music, Disco, House, and Afrobeats.
- Fantasy Stage at Rathausplatz – "From Talent to Star" campaign with Augsburg's newcomers.
- City Summer Stage at St. Ulrich – Opening concerts with established acts (most recently the Augsburg cult band The Presley Family).
- Silent Disco at Martin-Luther-Platz – with its own children's programme daily from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Maxstraße & Moritzplatz – Jazz, world music, soul.
Culinary delights from around the world
Between the stages, over 100 stalls, food trucks, and gastronomic open-air pavilions line the streets: from Swabian classics with Augustiner beer and Bavarian specialities to Vietnamese summer rolls, Ethiopian injera, Mexican tacos, or ice cream from regional manufacturers. The Augsburger Sommernächte is one of the most gastronomically diverse city festivals in Bavaria.
History and significance
Since their establishment, the Sommernächte have been considered the emotional heart of the Augsburg summer. In 2025, organisers counted around 120,000 visitors – a new record. The festival combines three objectives: free cultural participation in the city centre, visibility for Augsburg's music scene, and an economic boost for local retail.
Transport and safety
During the Sommernächte, Augsburg city centre is largely car-free. Trams are rerouted, and the public transport company sets up special timetables. Police and public order services are present with increased patrols; a ban on glass bottles applies at hotspots.
Augsburg – UNESCO World Heritage Site and festival city
Augsburg is Germany's third-oldest city and, since 2019, has been on the UNESCO list with the World Heritage site "Augsburg Water Management System". The Sommernächte take place against the unique Renaissance backdrop of the Town Hall, Perlachturm, and Fuggerei – a synthesis of history and urban summer life that can only be found here in Bavaria, in the area surrounding the city of Augsburg.
