About Tag des offenen Denkmals Augsburg

On the second Sunday in September, over 6,500 monuments open their doors across Germany — Augsburg has been one of the most dedicated cities for the Tag des offenen Denkmals for years. The former Free Imperial City and present-day UNESCO World Heritage site "Augsburg Water Management System" presents its architectural and industrial history with over 50 program points. Under the nationwide motto for 2026, "Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure," the focus will be on the waterworks, municipal utility facilities, the railway park, the canals, and the buildings by city architect Elias Holl. All events are free of charge.

One Sunday, Dozens of Monuments — Augsburg Opens Up

The Tag des offenen Denkmals is Germany's largest cultural event — and in Augsburg, one of the most densely programmed editions in all of Bavaria. This is made possible by the city's unique heritage: from the Renaissance town hall and the Augustus Fountain to the Lechviertel canal, the waterworks at Hochablass, the railway park, and the former municipal gasworks.

2026 Motto — Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure

The annual motto for 2026, proclaimed by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, is Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure. Augsburg is a fitting city for this theme like few others: The "Augsburg Water Management System," consisting of monumental fountains, waterworks, and drinking water canals, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019 — an acknowledgment of the city's pioneering role in technology since the Middle Ages.

What Can Be Visited

  • Waterworks at Hochablass and the monumental Augsburg fountains
  • Buildings by city architect Elias Holl (Town Hall, Zeughaus, Heilig-Geist-Spital)
  • Olympic canoeing course on the Eiskanal
  • Augsburg Railway Park with historic locomotives and workshops
  • Former municipal gasworks and the Lechhausen tram depot
  • Program for families and children in numerous city districts

Augsburg as an Event Hub

The city of Augsburg in the state of Bavaria (Swabia administrative region) coordinates the program points through its Cultural Department. Admission to all sites is free. An official app from the German Foundation for Monument Protection allows you to plan routes in advance and favorite program points.

Tag des offenen Denkmals Augsburg — edition 2026

The 2026 Tag des offenen Denkmals in Augsburg takes place on Sunday, September 13. Under the nationwide annual motto "Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure," the city will showcase over 50 program points related to the buildings of city architect Elias Holl, the UNESCO World Heritage Water Management System, the railway park, and historic utility facilities. Admission to all sites is free.

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Augsburg will present its unique architectural heritage in over 50 programs. The day will be thematically shaped by the work of city architect Elias Holl — the Renaissance Town Hall, Zeughaus, and Heilig-Geist-Spital exemplify his architectural signature. Additionally, the program will open doors to industrial monuments and infrastructure buildings that are otherwise inaccessible.

The "Augsburg Water Management System," a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019, forms another focal point: monumental fountains, the Hochablass weir, the Eiskanal with the Olympic canoeing course, and the waterworks will be showcased. Industrial monuments such as the former municipal gasworks and the Lechhausen tram depot will also be opened.
