Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure — Augsburg's UNESCO World Heritage Opens Its Doors
The Tag des offenen Denkmals is Germany's largest cultural event — and in Augsburg, one of the most densely programmed editions in all of Bavaria. This is made possible by the city's unique heritage: from the Renaissance town hall and the Augustus Fountain to the Lechviertel canal, the waterworks at Hochablass, the railway park, and the former municipal gasworks.
The annual motto for 2026, proclaimed by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, is Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure. Augsburg is a fitting city for this theme like few others: The "Augsburg Water Management System," consisting of monumental fountains, waterworks, and drinking water canals, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019 — an acknowledgment of the city's pioneering role in technology since the Middle Ages.
The city of Augsburg in the state of Bavaria (Swabia administrative region) coordinates the program points through its Cultural Department. Admission to all sites is free. An official app from the German Foundation for Monument Protection allows you to plan routes in advance and favorite program points.
On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Augsburg will present its unique architectural heritage in over 50 programs. The day will be thematically shaped by the work of city architect Elias Holl — the Renaissance Town Hall, Zeughaus, and Heilig-Geist-Spital exemplify his architectural signature. Additionally, the program will open doors to industrial monuments and infrastructure buildings that are otherwise inaccessible.
The "Augsburg Water Management System," a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019, forms another focal point: monumental fountains, the Hochablass weir, the Eiskanal with the Olympic canoeing course, and the waterworks will be showcased. Industrial monuments such as the former municipal gasworks and the Lechhausen tram depot will also be opened.
