Holi — the Indian festival, adapted worldwide as an open-air event
The original Holi is one of the most important religious and cultural festivals in Hindu India — a spring festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, the blooming of nature, and the dissolution of social barriers. The tradition involves throwing colourful powders and water at each other. The Holi Festival of Colours series brought this concept to major European cities as an open-air music festival starting in the 2010s — detached from its religious context, but retaining the central element of coloured powders.
Big Throw — the highlight of every hour
The signature moment of the Holi Festival is the Big Throw. Every full hour (12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM, etc.), the DJ calls for a synchronised throw: thousands of visitors throw coloured powder into the air at the same time. For a few seconds, a dense rainbow mist hangs over the festival grounds before descending upon the crowd. These Big Throws are the most photographed moments of the festival — Instagram material par excellence and a collective moment of joy.
Music — Electro, House, Minimal
Musically, the Holi Festival belongs to the Electronic Dance Music tradition. DJs take turns on the main stage — Electro, Tech-House, Progressive House, Minimal Techno, a mix of festival hits and underground sounds. The line-up is typically announced shortly before the festival. DJ sets from established festival acts from the NRW scene and one or two bigger headliners are expected.
Ages 16 and over — ID required
The Holi Festival is a 16+ event. ID will be checked at the entrance. This age limit is a response to the safety and supervision concept of modern open-air festivals. Families with younger children do not attend this festival — those wanting colour powder experiences with children might prefer the LEVspielt children's festival or city festivals. There is no dress code, but traditionally many visitors wear white, as colours show up best on it.
Neuland-Park — the festival park
The venue is Neuland-Park in Leverkusen-Wiesdorf, address Adolfstr. 103. With its wide meadows and location directly on the Rhine, the park is one of the most attractive Holi locations in NRW. Both the arrival and the atmosphere benefit from the location: a free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes from the Chempark S-Bahn station; free parking is available in the surrounding area, about a 15-minute walk away.
Powder, Drinks, Catering
The colour powders are sold on-site — €2.50 per bag. The usual amount per visitor is 3–5 bags, depending on the duration and intensity of throwing. In addition, there is catering (street food stalls), bars (cocktails, beer, Aperol), and drink stands with water. Important note: Contact lens wearers should bring protective goggles — colour powder in the eyes can be uncomfortable.
In the NRW Festival Summer
The Holi Festival of Colours series stops in dozens of German cities every summer — Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum, Dortmund, Essen, Münster, Bonn, and Leverkusen. This has made Holi a mass phenomenon — and at the same time, a recurring festival with its own fan base. For Leverkusen, the festival is a summer highlight: a focused concept (colour powder + DJ music), but highly effective in marketing and with the audience.
