Large communal table under the open sky in Zell's old town with Mosel wine and regional specialties
The Long Table format has established itself in many German cities in recent years: a continuous table is set up in the middle of a city center or old town, laid, and used for a communal dinner. The idea is simple and powerful: by everyone sitting at one table, the invisible boundaries between residents and visitors, between regulars and first-timers, between vintners and restaurateurs fall away. A city community is created that offers space for everyone for an evening.
In Zell (Mosel), the Long Table takes place in July. The narrow old town with its alleys and small squares is the ideal backdrop: the tables are set up in the middle of the streets, decorated with white tablecloths, glasses, crockery, and small vases. The residents organize the event with the city and local gastronomy β each course is prepared by a different host, and the Zell vintners serve the appropriate wines. The culinary and oenological characteristics typical of the Mosel are thus fully showcased.
A typical menu might start with a cool soup or a Mosel salad, followed by a main course of game, Mosel fish, or a classic onion tart, and conclude with a dessert variation β such as a peach sorbet made from the red Mosel vineyard peach. Live music from folk, jazz, or typical Mosel folk music provides the atmosphere. Tickets for the Long Table are sold in advance as places are limited. The format thrives on encounters; those who book should be prepared for conversations with their table neighbors.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Zell in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of comparable long-table formats on the Mosel: reception in the early evening with a sekt aperitif, multi-course menu with corresponding wine pairings, musical accompaniment by live acts at moderate volume, festival end in the late evening.
