Contemporary Art Fair from April 16 to 19, 2026 at Areal Böhler — 119 Galleries from 22 Countries
Düsseldorf, with around 645,000 inhabitants, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and a district-free city, has been home to one of the most important art fairs in Western Germany since its first edition in 2017: Art Düsseldorf. In 2026, the 8th edition will take place from April 16 to 19 at the Areal Böhler in Düsseldorf-Heerdt — the former stainless steel forge of the Böhler company, whose industrial-monumental brick architecture offers an extraordinary stage for contemporary art.
The 2026 edition brings together 119 international galleries from 22 countries. The geographical scope ranges from Berlin, Vienna, Milan, Copenhagen, and Lisbon to overseas — an international lineup that aims to compete with Frieze and Art Basel, but focuses on the Western German collector market. Compared to the previous edition in 2025 (around 110 galleries), the number of exhibitors has grown — a sign that the fair has established itself in the international gallery calendar.
A particular strength of the fair is its Rhenish roots: in 2026, 33 galleries from the Rhineland will be represented, including 19 from Düsseldorf itself. Cologne, Bonn, and Mönchengladbach are also strongly represented. This Rhenish focus distinguishes Art Düsseldorf from major international fairs like Art Basel or Frieze — it has a clear regional identity and sees itself as the platform for Rhenish contemporary art.
The VIP opening will take place on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM — exclusively for collectors, press representatives, gallery VIPs, and invited guests. Regular public access will follow from 4:00 PM onwards. This staggered opening strategy is standard internationally for art fairs and gives collectors the first hours without crowds. For the general public, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the most rewarding days.
The Areal Böhler, located at Hansaallee 321 in Düsseldorf-Heerdt on the western bank of the Rhine, is one of the most spectacular industrial monuments in NRW: high brick halls, cast-iron steel beams, a mix of forging tradition and early 20th-century industrial architecture. The atmosphere is a distinct component of the fair — many galleries deliberately arrange their stands in dialogue with the historic architecture.
In addition to the gallery offerings, Art Düsseldorf provides an accompanying program: “Meet the Galleries 2026” (guided tours through the exhibitors), Magazine Format with interviews and a guide, “Business Meets Art” (professional networking event for companies and collectors). Live chat support and an online booking system for hotels and VIP receptions are available via the website.
The 2026 edition of Art Düsseldorf solidifies the fair's position as the most important art fair for contemporary art in NRW. 119 galleries from 22 countries form an international lineup ranging from Western Europe to the USA and Asia. The Areal Böhler in Düsseldorf-Heerdt remains the focal point of the exhibition areas — the historic stainless steel forge with its industrial character.
With 33 galleries from the Rhineland (19 from Düsseldorf, plus Cologne, Bonn, Mönchengladbach), the fair has a strong regional anchor that distinguishes it from purely international fairs. Accompanying program: Meet the Galleries 2026 (tours), Business Meets Art (networking).
