ARRABAL — Tangofestival Potsdam

Tango from the Suburbs

The name "Arrabal" refers to the densely populated outskirts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo – the cradle of tango. It is precisely this connection of folk music, big-city longing, and choreographic elegance that the ARRABAL Tangofestival has been celebrating in Potsdam since 2014. The organiser is fabrik Potsdam, the renowned international centre for dance and performance in Schiffbauergasse on Tiefen See.

Programme and Format

The festival combines several formats: concerts with live orchestras, large Milongas (tango dance evenings), a festive opening ball, workshops for all levels, and choreographic stage productions. Every year, tango musicians from Argentina, Uruguay, Europe, and Germany share the stage – many of them for the first time in Potsdam.

Date and Venue 2026

The 2026 edition is scheduled for October 2026 in the official festival calendar of Schiffbauergasse. Exact dates and programme details will be published by fabrik Potsdam in summer 2026. The venue is Schiffbauergasse with its dance halls, the fabrik hall, and the surrounding industrial monuments.

Workshops for All Levels

A central element of ARRABAL is the dance workshops with internationally sought-after Tanguero:as. From the first step to advanced Codigos of the pista – anyone wanting to learn or deepen their tango skills will find one of the most concentrated teaching programmes in Germany during this festival week. Advance booking is recommended.

Potsdam as a Tango Location

With ARRABAL, Potsdam (capital of the state of Brandenburg) has a tango festival that is considered curatorially independent within the scene – unlike pure Milonga festivals, ARRABAL focuses on the interplay of concerts, dance, and performance. Schiffbauergasse, as the city's central cultural hub, provides the stages, halls, and atmosphere.
