Guided tours on the trail of the Slavs at Rügen's northernmost tip
Cape Arkona forms the northernmost tip of the island of Rügen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district – a steep coast cape with lighthouses, a signal tower, and a wide view over the Baltic Sea. But the cape is more than a scenic landmark: it is an important archaeological site. The Archaeological Tours Cape Arkona make this history tangible for visitors.
The centerpiece of the tours is Jaromarsburg – a Slavic rampart and temple site of the Ranen, a West Slavic tribe that settled the cape in the early Middle Ages. This was the site of the temple of the god Swantewit, a sanctuary of supra-regional importance, until the fortress was conquered by the Danes under King Valdemar I in 1168. Remains of the massive rampart are still visible at the cape today. The tours also explain the Viking and medieval history of northeastern Rügen.
The tours are designed as a guided hike of about three kilometers. An archaeologist accompanies the group, explaining finds, the rampart, and historical contexts directly on site. The tours take place during the high summer on Thursdays and combine physical activity in the coastal landscape with well-founded knowledge transfer.
Cape Arkona belongs to the municipality of Putgarten, Rügen's northernmost municipality. The cape itself is car-free; shuttles operate from the outskirts of the village. With its lighthouses, Slavic rampart, and steep coast, Cape Arkona is one of the island's most visited excursion destinations – the archaeological tours reveal its deeper historical dimension.
For 2026, the Archaeological Tours at Cape Arkona are scheduled for five Thursdays – from July 23 to August 20, each from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
An archaeologist will lead the group on a hike of about three kilometers across the northernmost tip of Rügen. The focus will be on the Slavic Jaromarsburg and the Ranen temple site, as well as the Viking and medieval history of northeastern Rügen. Finds, the rampart, and historical contexts will be explained directly on site.
Further details on the meeting point, registration, and participation fee will be announced by the organizer Kap Arkona at kap-arkona.de.
