Weekly historical tours through the former NVA bunker at the northern tip of Rügen
The Kap Arkona Naval Operations Bunker is located directly at the northernmost point of the island of Rügen, embedded in the unique ensemble of two lighthouses, the Slavic settlement of Jaromarsburg, and the cliff coast overlooking the Baltic Sea. Built in the 1980s as the command post of the 6th Flotilla of the NVA Volksmarine, the underground facility served to command naval units in the western Baltic Sea region.
Today, visitors can explore the bunker's functional rooms: the operations center, radio room, supply technology, and crew quarters. The exhibition includes original navigation instruments, maps, uniforms, and military-historical objects from the GDR era. The tour lasts about an hour and is conducted in small groups—vivid, calm, without military glorification.
Kap Arkona has been a strategic observation point since the early Middle Ages: the pagan Slavic temple fortress of Svantevit once stood here, and the lighthouses of 1827 and 1902 mark the shipping routes between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden lagoons. The bunker adds another, more recent layer to this accumulation of history—making Kap Arkona a place where natural experience and history meet directly.
Putgarten belongs to the municipality at Kap Arkona in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. The Wittow peninsula is accessible via the B96 and L30 roads; in summer, tourist trains run regularly from the large car park in Putgarten to the Cape. The tours are an ideal addition to a walk along the cliff coast between Vitt and the Cape.
In the summer of 2026, the naval operations bunker will open its doors on 15 Wednesday afternoons. The guided tour combines a bunker visit with explanations of naval history, the function of the former command post, and the strategic importance of the cape during the Cold War.
The tours are integrated into the seasonal event program at Kap Arkona, which ranges from Viking festivals and summer concerts to Christmas markets — however, the naval operations bunker remains the most historically authentic element of the program.
