About Anemolter Harvest Festival

The Anemolter Harvest Festival is the traditional thanksgiving festival of the Anemolter village community, a district of the municipality of Stolzenau in the Nienburg/Weser district. For two days on the first weekend of September, the end of the harvest season is celebrated on the Anemolter village square. The program includes classic elements of a North German harvest festival: the traditional herring meal, a harvest thanksgiving service, a harvest festival parade with a decorated harvest crown, a communal meal, and a dance evening with live music. The festival begins on Friday, September 4th, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, September 5th, features the full day's program.

Anemolter — Village by the Monastery Forest

Anemolter is a district of the municipality of Stolzenau in the Nienburg/Weser district and part of the Mittelweser collective municipality. The small village is located near the Schinna Monastery in an agricultural landscape. The Anemolter village community celebrates the annual harvest festival as the central event of the village year.

Tradition of the Harvest Festival

Harvest festivals have a centuries-old tradition in the rural communities of Lower Saxony. They mark the end of the harvest season and are a thanksgiving for a good harvest as well as an opportunity for the village community to celebrate together. The harvest crown — an artfully woven structure of ears of corn, flowers, and ribbons — is the central symbol of the festival and is often created with great craftsmanship.

Herring Meal — A North German Specialty

The herring meal is a particularly North German harvest festival tradition: pickled herring with boiled potatoes and side dishes are eaten together at a long table, often accompanied by a clear schnapps. This tradition underscores the close connection of the Mittelweser region to the Weser River and its fishing tradition, as well as to North German cuisine.

Two Days of Program

The harvest festival extends over two days: Friday evening, September 4th, from 7 p.m., the festival opens with a reception and initial social activities; Saturday, September 5th, features the full day's program with a harvest thanksgiving service, harvest festival parade, herring meal, children's program, and an evening dance with live music in the festival tent or village community hall.

Identity and Community

Even in times of increasing industrialization of agriculture, small villages like Anemolter keep their harvest festivals alive. They are an expression of a close-knit village community, provide identity for the residents, and are also an open occasion where guests from the neighborhood and former villagers are welcome. The Anemolter Harvest Festival is a living example that rural tradition still has its place in the 21st century.

Anemolter Harvest Festival — edition 2026

The festival is open to the entire village community, friendly clubs, former villagers, and guests from the surrounding districts of the Mittelweser collective municipality.
