A Festival with Over 250 Years of Tradition

The Annafest is the traditional patronal festival of the town of Grafenwöhr in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab (state of Bavaria, administrative region of Oberpfalz). It dates back to the consecration of the »Maria-Hilf« chapel on July 26, 1770, and has therefore been celebrated for over 250 years around the feast day of Saint Anna.

Annamarkt and Fire Department Festival

The centerpiece is the festival of the Volunteer Fire Department in the Stadtpark and the large Annamarkt: Numerous vendors offer their goods around the Marktplatz and Schulstraße from 10 AM to 6 PM, often combined with a Sunday shopping event. A flea market organized by the citizens' association complements the offerings.

Spiritual and Cultural Program

  • Festive church service at the Annabergkirche, plus a children's service at the Lourdesgrotte
  • Staged historical city tour by the Historical Society and the Catholic theater group (partly in German and English)
  • Catering by the fire department, performances by the Stadtkapelle (town band) and other music groups
  • Concluding procession of lights from the St. Anna Church to the Church of Mariä Himmelfahrt

Living City History

The Annafest combines religious tradition, market activities, and city history into an identity-forming festival. The theatrical city tour brings the history of Grafenwöhr – a town also shaped by the large US Army training area – to life for visitors.
