Three days of festival mile in the city center
The Stadtfest Neustadt an der Donau is one of the most important inner-city citizens' festivals in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim. For three days, the historic city center of the Große Kreisstadt – not far from the famous Befreiungshalle and Walhalla in the wider Danube valley – transforms into a continuous festival mile with stages, market stalls, carousels, and festival operations.
The festival opens on Friday evening at 6 p.m. with the Neustadt Town Band – the town's musical calling card. A tradition is the tapping of the keg, where 250 liters of free beer are served. Parallel to this, the children's program begins at the Kulturhaus Storchenwirt and at the Stadtwall (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.), offering families an early program point.
The program design thrives on diversity: on the Neustadt stage, cover bands like Agent Six perform with dance and party music, current songs, and classic rock hits, while the Recoaro stage presents Bavarian bands like Bayerisch Jambalaya or Musica Ribelle with 80s hits, Bavarian music, and current charts. Walking acts and small performances between the stages provide continuous entertainment in the pedestrian zone.
On Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m., the traditional parade marches through the streets – brass bands, local traditional costume associations, the Grenzstoarucka, and the Neustadt Town Band lead the procession. Afterwards, from 6 p.m., the stages take over the program again. Sunday is dedicated to the Frühschoppen (morning pint) and winding down – many stalls remain open until the afternoon.
Neustadt an der Donau is strategically located between Regensburg, Ingolstadt, and Kelheim at the Danube knee. The town, with around 13,000 inhabitants, is known for its historic cityscape with the St. Laurentius parish church and the Storchenwirt-Kulturhaus, which becomes a family center during the Stadtfest. Admission to the Stadtfest is free – the town sees the festival as a community event and not as a large commercial event.
In 2026, the city center of Neustadt an der Donau will once again become a festival mile for three days. Several stages will be spread across the historic squares, festival stalls run by local clubs will line the pedestrian zone, and the program will run from midday to midnight.
While the city officially releases further program details shortly before the festival, the structure is well-established: Friday evening opening with keg tapping and live music, Saturday parade and main program day, Sunday Frühschoppen and family day with a wind-down in the late afternoon.
The current program will be published at neustadt-donau.de/stadtfest/programm.
