Burscheid — Town between Rhineland and Bergisches Land
Burscheid, with just under 19,000 inhabitants in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is located on the eastern edge of Leverkusen — geographically precisely where the Rhine plain transitions into the hilly Bergisches Land. This location shapes the town's self-image: Rhenish in language (with a distinct Kölsch influence), Bergisch in its cityscape, car-affine and medium-sized in its economy (Geberit headquarters, research facilities). The Altstadtfest is a comparatively young event — organized by Burscheid Live e.V. since the early 2020s and now in its 8th edition after a pandemic-related break.
Three Days, Three Genre Worlds
The Altstadtfest 2026 follows a programmatic tripartite division that sets the festival apart from the usual city festival monotony:
- Friday — Kölsche Tön & Dänz: Carnival acts, Kölsch bands, Rhenish sing-along classics. Burscheid is within the catchment area of the Cologne Carnival scene; many Burscheid residents actively celebrate Carnival; Friday evening is akin to a summer "Sitzung" (carnival assembly).
- Saturday — Schlager & Party: Dance acts, Schlager singers (often TV-famous artists), cover bands, party program until 11 PM. Saturday is the busiest day and appeals to a broad audience.
- Sunday — Music, Dances, and Hits from Around the World: World music, folk dances, international acts — a deliberately cosmopolitan closing program that elevates the festival beyond a purely regional context.
Kirmes on Hauptstraße
Parallel to the stage, the Kirmes at the historic site takes place — rides, shooting galleries, candy stalls, carousels, and food stalls on Hauptstraße. The term historic site refers to Burscheid's market square, which has been a meeting place for citizens since the Middle Ages and has largely retained its spatial identity despite all urban transformations. The combination of stage program and Kirmes makes the Altstadtfest a complete weekend outing — something to listen to, something to ride, something to eat.
Burscheid Live e.V. — Community Engagement Embodied
The organizer is the association Burscheid Live e.V., founded to revitalize Burscheid's city center through events and initiatives. The association works closely with the City of Burscheid, local retailers, and tourism. With the Altstadtfest, Burscheid Live has created a flagship event that attracts several thousand visitors to the city center annually — thus also providing visibility for Burscheid's retail sector.
In the Bergisches Land with a Fun Factor
Compared to Cologne, Düsseldorf, or the Ruhr area, the Bergisches Land is characterized by less intense tourism — making events like the Burscheider Altstadtfest important self-portrayals of the region. Visitors to the festival experience not the choreography of a big city event, but the confident sociability of a small town shaped by medium-sized businesses — and that is precisely the appeal.
