A Carnival with a Long History
The Althistorische Rötzer Fasenacht is one of Bavaria's most unique carnival events. While Carnival is celebrated in the Rhineland and Alemannic Fasnet in Swabia, the Upper Palatinate Forest preserves the »Althistorische« – a form of carnival whose costumes, masks, and groups draw on historical, legendary, and allegorical motifs.
Organizers: Faschingskomitee »Immer dieselben«
The event is supported by the Faschingskomitee »Immer dieselben« (Carnival Committee »Always the Same«) with its 1st Chairman Frank Gazinski. The committee organizes the parades, supports the groups, coordinates with the police and town administration, and ensures the safety of a festival that draws tens of thousands of spectators to the town center.
Parade with over 60 Groups and Floats
The highlight of the carnival is the grand parade on Shrove Tuesday. Over 60 walking groups and floats parade through the town center of Rötz – each group with its own motto, costume, and often months of preparation for choreography. Drummer groups, music bands, allegorical floats, witches, jesters, and community groups create a vibrant picture of Upper Palatinate traditions.
Rötz in the Oberpfälzer Wald
Rötz is a small town in the Cham district (Bavaria), located at the foot of the Oberpfälzer Wald (Upper Palatinate Forest) on the Schwarzach river. The »Schwarzenburg Festivals« region has created a second cultural highlight with its carnival, attracting thousands of visitors each year from the Oberpfalz, the Bavarian Forest, and neighboring Czech Republic.
Character of the Event
The »Althistorische« differs from many modern carnival parades through its diversity of traditional motifs, the elaborate commitment of the groups, and the combination of folk custom and history. Visitors experience a Shrove Tuesday where entire families and generations participate – a living piece of Upper Palatinate identity.
