Classic Palatinate village festival weekend with club stalls and music in the Maxdorf municipality
The Birkenheider Kerwe is a classic Palatinate village festival that preserves the charm of smaller communities and cultivates the typical Palatinate Kerwe tradition. Birkenheide has belonged to the Maxdorf municipality since 1972 and lies on the edge of the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest), just under 10 km west of Ludwigshafen.
Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Birkenheider Kerwe includes the classic elements:
Despite the small size of the community with just under 2,800 inhabitants, club life in Birkenheide is vibrant. The fire brigade, sports club, music club, and local history society are all involved in the Kerwe on a voluntary basis and ensure the festival can take place every year through their work. The proceeds from the food stalls go towards club activities, youth work, and local social projects.
For the duration of the Kerwe, the town centre is partially closed to secure the festival grounds and allow for the setup of stalls and the stage. The Maxdorf municipality informs residents and road users in good time about the exact closures, diversions, and parking facilities.
Birkenheide is located on the eastern edge of the Pfälzerwald – Germany's largest contiguous forest area and a biosphere reserve. Its location between the Vorderpfalz and the forest makes the community a popular starting point for hikes and local recreation. This landscape diversity also shapes the identity of the community and, consequently, its central festival.
The 2026 edition continues the decades-old tradition of the Birkenheider Kerwe. In this small municipality of just under 2,800 inhabitants, a festive atmosphere is created that brings neighbours together, provides space for clubs, and preserves the Palatinate Kerwe spirit in its purest form. The festival weekend is also an important occasion for solidarity among the Birkenheide clubs, whose voluntary commitment ensures the success of the festival.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organiser in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
