About Birkenheider Kerwe

The Birkenheider Kerwe is the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the municipality of Birkenheide in the Maxdorf municipality. Every year at the end of August or beginning of September, the approximately 2,800 inhabitants of the small Vorderpfalz community celebrate their Kerwe with a festival tent, club stalls, music, and the typical Palatinate Kerwe atmosphere. Unlike the larger Maxdorfer Kerwe, the Birkenheider Kerwe is a manageable, family-friendly village festival where almost all residents meet their neighbours. The road closures around the town centre are traditionally coordinated by the Maxdorf municipality.

The Birkenheider Kerwe is a classic Palatinate village festival that preserves the charm of smaller communities and cultivates the typical Palatinate Kerwe tradition. Birkenheide has belonged to the Maxdorf municipality since 1972 and lies on the edge of the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest), just under 10 km west of Ludwigshafen.

Palatinate Kerwe Tradition

Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Birkenheider Kerwe includes the classic elements:

  • Festival opening with keg tapping and welcome address by the local mayor.
  • Kerwe parade with local clubs and the Kerweborscht (Kerwe boy) group.
  • Kerwerede / Kerwepredigt (Kerwe speech/sermon) in Palatinate dialect, with a humorous review of the year's events in the village.
  • Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday with brass music and Palatinate lunch.
  • Dancing and live music in the evenings with local bands or DJs.
  • Club stalls with Palatinate specialities: Bratwurst, Saumagen, Leberknödel, Flammkuchen, Palatinate wine and beer.

Club Life in Birkenheide

Despite the small size of the community with just under 2,800 inhabitants, club life in Birkenheide is vibrant. The fire brigade, sports club, music club, and local history society are all involved in the Kerwe on a voluntary basis and ensure the festival can take place every year through their work. The proceeds from the food stalls go towards club activities, youth work, and local social projects.

Road Closures by the Municipality

For the duration of the Kerwe, the town centre is partially closed to secure the festival grounds and allow for the setup of stalls and the stage. The Maxdorf municipality informs residents and road users in good time about the exact closures, diversions, and parking facilities.

Birkenheide and the Pfälzerwald

Birkenheide is located on the eastern edge of the Pfälzerwald – Germany's largest contiguous forest area and a biosphere reserve. Its location between the Vorderpfalz and the forest makes the community a popular starting point for hikes and local recreation. This landscape diversity also shapes the identity of the community and, consequently, its central festival.

Birkenheider Kerwe — edition 2026

The Birkenheider Kerwe 2026 is expected to take place on the last weekend of August – following the 2025 edition from August 29 to September 1. Three to four days of Palatinate village festival with a festival tent, club stalls, Kerwe parade, Frühschoppen, and live music will mark the festival weekend. Birkenheide, a small municipality in the Maxdorf community, celebrates its Kirchweih in a family atmosphere. The exact program and the final date for 2026 will be published in due course by the local and Maxdorf municipalities.

The 2026 edition continues the decades-old tradition of the Birkenheider Kerwe. In this small municipality of just under 2,800 inhabitants, a festive atmosphere is created that brings neighbours together, provides space for clubs, and preserves the Palatinate Kerwe spirit in its purest form. The festival weekend is also an important occasion for solidarity among the Birkenheide clubs, whose voluntary commitment ensures the success of the festival.
