Fairytale time under the open sky on the Schwarzwihrberg — amateur ensemble aged 4 to 82 performs fairytales for young and old
The Schwarzenburg Festival in Rötz is a lovingly maintained open-air theatre in the Oberpfälzer Wald. The venue is the ruin of the Schwarzenburg on the Schwarzwihrberg, one of the most impressive castle backdrops in the region. Under the motto »Fairytale Time«, an amateur ensemble brings a well-known fairytale to the natural stage year after year — for young and old alike.
The special feature: amateur actors aged 4 to 82 perform on stage. This intergenerational mix creates the familiar charm of the festival. The productions are elaborately designed and attract visitors from all over the Oberpfalz.
The ascent to the castle is part of the experience: the approximately 45-minute hike up is accompanied by an interactive fairytale forest, where QR code puzzle stations along the hiking trail invite participation. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy open-air theatre in a romantic castle setting.
For 2026, the ensemble has chosen Otfried Preußler's children's book classic »Das kleine Gespenst«: The story of the little night ghost who wants to experience the world during the day for once — and discovers that its sudden visibility causes all sorts of commotion in a small town. Bernhard Hübl is directing. The premiere takes place on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
