30 years of Indie Rock Festival by the Rural Youth between cornfields and forest in Upper Swabia
In 1996, the KLjB Altheim organized its first open-air festival under the motto "total verROCKt!" — a festival from rural youth for rural youth. Over the years, the festival has become a brand and now has supra-regional appeal. In 2026, the Altheimer Open-Air will celebrate its 30th anniversary. What hasn't changed: The festival is organized entirely on a voluntary basis by the KLjB youth — over 80 young people between 15 and 28 years old handle stage construction, technology, catering, security, and booking.
The festival grounds at Pfarrgasse 1 in Altheim (a district of Riedlingen) are located between cornfields and forest — an atmosphere that is central to the festival's identity. You won't enter an industrial area or a city square, but an agricultural environment transformed into a festival world for two days. It is precisely this rural charm that attracts a loyal audience every year.
The 2026 program features a mix of Indie Rock and Alternative on stage. Lonely Spring from Hesse are one of the most exciting German-language Indie Rock bands of the present day — melodic, intense, with lyrics between longing and self-reflection. Moonkid mixes Indie Pop with electronic elements. Malastaire provides the rock edge. An opener band will be confirmed in spring 2026, as will the Super Aftershow to conclude the festival.
The Altheimer Open-Air belongs to that category of festivals that have become particularly valuable in the southern German festival landscape: small, voluntary, and not commercially oriented. The proceeds flow back into the association's work at KLjB. You won't experience a PR stunt here, but an event that thrives on the enthusiasm and commitment of young people.
Altheim is a district of Riedlingen — a town with a good 10,500 inhabitants on the Danube, in the Biberach district of Upper Swabia. The region between the Swabian Jura and Lake Constance is characterized by agriculture, with wide skies, rolling hills, and a strong tradition of village festivals. A festival visit can be well combined with a tour through the Danube floodplains or a detour to the nearby Bad Buchau.
The Altheimer Open-Air celebrates its anniversary with its 30th edition on August 7th and 8th, 2026. KLjB Altheim e.V. has put together a special line-up — with Lonely Spring, Moonkid, and Malastaire, three bands will be on stage that are currently receiving significant attention in the German indie scene. An opener band will be confirmed shortly before the festival, and the Super Aftershow will mark the conclusion.
The festival begins on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 7:30 PM. Saturday, August 8th, runs until approximately 3:30 AM. Camping is available on-site; the volunteer team handles security, catering, and stage technology entirely themselves.
Detailed stage program and performance order will be published on altheimer-open-air.de.
Festival tickets depend on the advance sales phase. Ticket prices will be updated on altheimer-open-air.de and festivalhopper.de. On-site box office available if not sold out. Camping is included in the ticket.
