Traditional May Festival with Arts and Crafts Market in Upper Swabia
Dürmentingen is a municipality with around 2,500 inhabitants in the southern part of the Biberach district, on the edge of Upper Swabia. Like many small communities in southern Germany, it celebrates May 1st with a village festival organized jointly by the local clubs — the music association, sports club, fire department, parish community, and rural women's association. The focus is on the arts and crafts market in the village center, making the festival a mix of a folk festival and an arts and crafts market.
Craftspeople from Upper Swabia with regional ties present their work at the market: wooden toys from the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura, jewelry in the Pforzheim tradition, knitwear from local wool, pottery from Upper Swabian workshops, and glasswork. There are also stalls with local products — honey, liqueurs, jams, cheese from surrounding farms — and creative gift ideas for Mother's Day, which follows two weeks later.
The Dürmentingen clubs offer Swabian classics: lentils with Spätzle, Maultaschen, freshly baked Swabian pretzels, Rinderbraten (roast beef), and grilled sausages. This is accompanied by draft beer from Upper Swabian breweries (mostly Berg Brewery from Ehingen) and wines from the Württemberg wine-growing region. The Dürmentingen Music Association plays for the morning "Frühschoppen" (morning pint), and in the afternoon, dance and music groups alternate.
For families, the Dürmentingen village festival is a classic May Day experience. Activities for children — bouncy castle, craft stand, face painting, sack race — are organized by the sports club and the parish community. The village center transforms into a festival ground for one day, without reaching the scale of a city festival — a classic Swabian village festival, as has been a tradition for generations on May Day.
The Dürmentingen Village Festival 2026 will take place on May Day, May 1st, 2026, in the village center. The organizers are the Dürmentingen clubs in cooperation with the municipal administration.
The focus is on the arts and crafts market, which will showcase wooden items, jewelry, knitwear, pottery, and glasswork from regional craftspeople from morning until early evening. In addition, the clubs will provide catering with Swabian specialties, the Dürmentingen Music Association will play for the "Frühschoppen," and the sports club will organize the family program with children's games.
