Aldnkuuschde Kerwa — Altenkunstadt Kirchweih
Franconian Kirchweih after Kilianstag
2026
About Aldnkuuschde Kerwa
Aldnkuuschde Kerwa — edition 2026
For centuries, the Kerwa has followed its traditional date: the first weekend after Kiliani (July 8th). The exact date for 2026 will be announced by the market town of Altenkunstadt via the event calendar altenkunstadt.de or the regional calendar obermain-jura.de.
The program follows the classic Middle Franconian-Upper Franconian Kerwa pattern: market stalls on the market square, brass music, refreshments in the inns, a children's carousel, and a festive Sunday with a celebratory church service. Additionally, smaller Kirchweihen take place in the districts of Maineck, Pfaffendorf, Spiesberg, and Woffendorf.

A Kerwa with Documented Tradition
The main Altenkunstadt Kirchweih has been celebrated for centuries on the first weekend after Kilianstag (July 8th). The date dates back to the consecration of the Catholic parish church on July 9th, 1537 — making the festival documented for almost 500 years. The second Sunday in July remains the traditional date, passed down from generation to generation.
Market Square, Brass Music, and Carousels
The venue is the market square of Altenkunstadt. This is where the market stalls are set up, where the local brass band plays, and where the carousel spins for the children. Local inns and clubs provide refreshments. A classic Middle Franconian-Upper Franconian festival where family members from the Maintal valley reunite.
Altenkunstadt in the Maintal Valley
Altenkunstadt is a market town with around 6,600 inhabitants in the Lichtenfels district, Upper Franconia administrative region, Bavaria. Besides the main town, the municipality includes the districts of Maineck, Pfaffendorf, Spiesberg, Woffendorf, and others. Each larger district maintains its own small Kirchweih (Laurenzi-Kerwa Pfaffendorf in August, Kirchweih Maineck and Kirchweih Woffendorf in July, Kirchweih Spiesberg in May). However, the Aldnkuuschde Kerwa of the main town remains the largest and oldest — a kind of mother festival for the community.
Kerwa Vocabulary
The Franconian abbreviation 'Aldnkuuschde' for 'Altenkunstadt' is part of regional linguistic pride. 'Kerwa' instead of the standard German 'Kirchweih', 'Aldnkuuschde' instead of 'Altenkunstadt' — the language of the festival is that of the village. Visitors to the Kerwa will hear it from every inn and every market stall.
